Many researchers have developed the measurement technique of in-cylinder flow characteristics and found the effect of intake port geometries on engine performance. The popular method for intake port evaluation has been known to be steady 리ow test. because of its simplicity. Various configurations of intake port are needed to test easily to find an optimal prototype. In this paper, we develope a method to make various shapes of port using resin, and test their performance in steady flow rig to find the factor of influence in tumble flow. Intake port shapes were changed by different their angle to surface of engine head, tumble characteristic was measured by a swirl impulse meter and tumble adaptor under steady condition.<br/>

Several technology have been investigated to reduce the emissions of 2-stroke motorcycle engines, for example, advanced fuel metering system, improved scavenging characteristic.combustion chamber modification, exhaust gas aftertreatment, etc, <br/> Aftertreatment technology is a cost effective method specially for small 2-stroke motorcycle engine. Catalysts can reduce not only emissions, but also power output, if it has any obstruction to the flow of exhaust gas.<br/> Within this study. a 90cc small 2-stroke engine was used with different types of catalysts. Comparison tests were performed between a hot tube catalyst and a hot tube plus flex coat catalyst. This result demonstrates the effects from both restriction and inside temperature caused by catalysts.

Swirl and tumble flows were known as very important factors in improving the gasoline engine performance and emissions. We made various configurations of SCV to analyse the effect of swirl and tumble flows in a spark-ignition engine. The flow charactristics of four-valve cylinder head with different SCV were first examined in a steady flow rig. The tumble flow and turbulence in the four-valve pentroof combustion chamber were measured under motored conditions with laser doppler velocimetry. The effect of various intake ports are investigated in a spark-ignition engine. The flow characteristics of four-valve cylinder head were first examed in a steady flow rig for different intake ports. Tumble strength of intake configurations with different entry angles were Quantified with a tumble meter. The tumble flow and turbulence in the four-valve pentroof combustion chamber are measured under motored conditions with laser Doppler velocimetry. The combustion characteristics were examined in an operating multi-cylinder engine. Lean operating limit of real engine is identified with the information on the cycle-by-cycle variation.<br/>

Considering both performance and product costs, the use of catalytic aftertreatment to reduce harmful gases in the exhaust streams of 2-stroke small engine is becoming widespread. The primary exhaust gas pollutants are carbon monoxide(CO) and hydrocarbons(HC) for vehicles equipped with 2-stroke engine. The inclined-tumble flow measurement and analysis were performed for various types of intake systems that generated several different combinations of swirl ratio and tumble ratio in the cylinder. The in-cylinder motion is varied by means of flow control unit located between the intake manifold and the cylinder head. This study was conducted on an optically accessed transparent single cylinder research engine. The swirl/tumble ratio and angular speed of the tumble and swirl vortices, occuring inside the cylinder, are determined from a conventional steady flow rig and Laser Doppler Velocimetry under motoring conditions (at 1000rpm). The influence of swirl/tumble levels on the characteristics of turbulence was analysed. This study presents experimental results of the inclined-tumble flow structure, including the flow motion phenomena, swirl center rotation, angular momentum and turbulence intensity.<br/>
