This paper describes development strategy for Heavy-duty Diesel Engine to meet EURO-V emission regulations with EGR system. It discusses technologies and test results how to increasing EGR rate which is key issue for meeting EURO-V. Generally NOx could be reduced by increasing EGR rate and PM could be suppressed by increasing peak injection pressure for meeting EURO-V with EGR system. Most heavy-duty Diesel Engine has intercooler turbocharger system, so intake boost pressure is lower than exhaust turbine pressure. It means that driving EGR and increasing EGR rate are very difficult if not using additional tools. Especially WGT heavy-duty engines must be applied with additional measures for increasing EGR rate relative to VGT engines. In this paper intake venturi and exhaust chock valve system are applied to increasing EGR rate in condition of WGT turbocharger. VGT turbocharger shows better emission and BSFC values than WGT turbocharger with intake venturi for meeting EURO-V, but WGT system must be re-considered in points of cost, reliability and durability.
