In general, a bidirectional axial pump has an efficiency much lower than the classical unidirectional pump because of the symmetry of the blade type. To improve the pump efficiency, therefore, we have performed an optimal design on a bidirectional axial pump to be used as an anti-heeling system in ships. The Taguchi approach is used for the optimal design and the pump efficiency is set as the objective function. For the calculation of the torque, head and efficiency, we use Ansys CFX V13.0 software. It is found that the pump efficiency depends strongly on parameters such as the angles of blade inlet and outlet thickness and length. Finally, the optimal design using the selected parameters can enhance the pump efficiency of the bidirectional pump.
