According to the research by the recent research, 25% of foreign investors in the developing world leave the country or cancel the planned investment due to political risk. Considering the efforts government do to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and possible costs for litigation or reputational damage, this is a very significant loss. Thus, it is important for government to identify specific political risks that makes investors leave and help them retain and expand businesses. Investment Grievance Mechanism (IGM) can contribute this goal by managing investor’s grievances in a timely manner before escalating to disputes or causing negative impact. IGM can also serve as a tool for properly implementing International Investment Agreements (IIAs) on the ground and in a way that is more in tune with their original intent to mitigate political risks in cross-border investment transactions. At the same time, by improving the domestic institutional framework and inducing positive changes in the investment climate, the IGM can contribute broader investment climate reform.
