본 연구는 동경대전과 용담유사의 역사적 배경연구를 기본으로 하여 용담검무(龍潭劍舞)의 역사성과 내재적인 가치를 알아보기 위해 수행하였다. 수운(水雲)최제우(崔濟愚)선생이 종교적 의식의 하나로 추었던 용담검무(龍潭劍舞)는 수운(水雲) 선생에 의하여 시작된 검무이다. 현재 전승되어 내려오는 대부분의 검무는 상무성과 무예적 특징이 없어 연희 형태로 추는 칼춤만이 일반적으로 알려져 있다. 하지만 용담검무(龍潭劍舞)는 검무로서의 가치는 물론 상무적 가치와 함께 무예적 기교도 함께 지니고 있는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 용담검무(龍潭劍舞)는 신체 균형 수련과 함께 정(靜)의 동작, 동(動)의 동작을 함께 수련할 수 있어 폭 넓은 연령층의 참여가 가능하다는 효용 가치도 지니고 있다고 할 수 있다. 우리나라의 검무가 역사적 흐름에 따라 변천되면서 잃어버린 제의적(祭儀的)면과 무예적(武藝的)인 면을 그대로 간직한 용담검무(龍潭劍舞)는 동학이 열고자 했던 후천개벽에의 의지를 담고 있는 역사성을 지니고 있다. 용담검무(龍潭劍舞)는 우리 민족 고유의 역사성과 함께 검무로서의 가치, 무예로서의 가치, 생활체육으로서의 가치 등의 내재적인 가치를 지니고 있는 전통문화라고 할 수 있을 것이다. This study purposed to be Based on a literature survey and historical background research about Donggyeongdaejeon and Yongdamyusa, this study tries to investigate the historicity and intrinsic values of the Yongdamkummoo. The Yongdamkummoo, which Teacher Suun performed as part of his religious ritual, shares the spirit with the sword dancing in the earliest age in consideration of the historical tradition of the Korean sword dancing. That is to say, the Yongdamkummoo is the kind of sword dancing that has been performed at the religious rituals of Donghak, which is based on the traditional Korean thoughts, and that internally contains the stage of the unification of Heaven and mankind which one can reach via the rituals and the aspiration for opening a new world via the unification of Heaven and mankind. The Yongdamkummoo means a sword dancing in which the martialism and strong force comes out via the sword along with beautiful dancing forms. The present sword dance does not have the martialism and martial properties, and the kind of sword dancing in the form of entertaining performance is generally known. From this perspective, the Yongdamkummoo can be said to have values as mind training and physical exercise along with its martialist values. Also, as for the efficacy of the Yongdamkummoo as part of life sports, people at a wide range of ages can participate in the Yongdamkummoo as they training themselves with the motion in state and that in movement as well as with physical balance training in spinning and the left-right symmetric motions. In the light of the historicity and characteristics of the Yongdamkummoo as seen from this study, it has a high utility as a life sport along with its values as martial art and as a traditional art.
