Paper-based detection devices are mostly detection devices made based on hydrophilic cellulose or nitrocellulose fibers. A typical example is a lateral flow strip. Due to the disadvantage that the commercialized paper-based detection device has a low detection limit, a PCR (polymerase chain reaction) process that replicates and amplifies the nucleic acid is essential when the amount of nucleic acid is small in the sample. By solving the low detection limit, which is a problem with existing paper-based detection devices, we wanted to fabricate a detection device that can perform on-site diagnosis quickly without the PCR process. A hydrophobic fiber pattern was made in paper in a very simple way, and the detection limit was dramatically improved by concentrating a fluorescent molecular beacon in the pattern, thereby producing a paper-based detection device that can omit the PCR process.
