Investigation of mass effect on the journal traces in the bearing clearance has been performed for better mass distribution of crank system components with the respects of lubrication on the big-end bearing. In this preliminary study, crank pin traces in the clearance of engine bearing are studies by varying the sizes of pin mass, while most previous studies regarding journal locus with dynamic loading system neglected the inertia effect of crank pin mass. Although the inertia effect of pin mass is negligible small compared to viscous force in ?? bearing, it gives a great amount of influences on the journal traces in full bearing computation.

Investigation of the mass effect on the journal traces in the clearance of engine bearing has been performed for better design of mass distribution of crank system components such as crank pin, piston, con-rod, balance weight, crank throw weight, etc. as well as for better oil reaction behaviors to the applied forces from the cylinder pressures on the bearing. In this preliminary study, crank pin traces in the engine bearing clearance are computed by varying the equivalent magnitude of crank pin mass that includes the masses of crank pin, piston, con-rod, etc., while most previous studies regarding journal traces in the bearing clearance neglect the inertia effects of crank pin mass. Although the inertia effect of pin mass is negligibly small compared to viscous force by π bearing theory, it is found that it gives a great amount of influences on the journal traces in full bearing computation (2π bearing theory) under the dynamic loading conditions.

This work analyzes the behaviors of aerated lubricant in the gap between con-rod bearing and journal. Aerated lubricant influences two major factors on the film formation. One is the density characteristics of the lubricant due to the volume change by the bubbles and the other is the viscosity characteristics of the lubricant due to the surface tension of the bubble. Those two major factors surprisingly increase the load capacity in certain ranges of bubble sizes and densities. Modified Reynolds' equation is developed with the consideration of aerated ratio in the lubricant and journal locus is computed with the Mobility method after the computation of two dimensional pressure distributions over the bearing area.

Continuously variable transmission (CVT) of toroidal type has a elliptical shape of contact zone under the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) condition, where the power is transmitted only by shearing the lubricant. Due to the small contact area of elliptical shape, the traction of the shear behaviors of lubricant over the contact zone is under extremely high contact pressure over 1.0 GPa. During the power transmission by shearing the fluid, many kinds of mechanical movements occur such as squeezing, sliding, rolling and spin. Among the movements, the spin effect that is the most undesirable contact behavior in transmitting the power frequently makes significant abnormal wear damage. In this work, the analysis of elliptical contact of EHL with spin effect is performed, which will give very useful information to understand the traction behaviors in toroidal type of CVT system.

The number of automatic transmission in use has been gradually increasing due to driving convenience. In order to increase efficiency and decrease shift shock, the structure of automatic transmission has been complicated. In order to ensure high reliability of the automatic transmission, it is very important to feed the proper quantity of lubricating oil to key parts of the automatic transmission. This study is performed on oil flow distribution measure though each oil hole inside the main shaft supplying ATF for system part by VFS(Variable Force Solenoid-valve) Control Apparatus. Oil flow, pressure and rotation speed are varied. Changes in flow rate with rotation speed are obtained. The study lead to the development of a model to analyse oil lubrication in the automatic transmission line.

The durability and efficiency of an automatic transmission are greatly affected by the lubrication properties of transmission fluid. However, it is difficult to exactly estimate the flow rate of lubricating oil at each part of automatic transmission because of its structural complexity under the rotating condition. This study is performed on oil flow distribution measures though each oil hole inside the main shaft supplying ATF for system parts. Oil enters a horizontal tube through entry and discharges into open air via radially-attached branches. Oil flow, pressure and rotational speed are varied. Changes in flow rate with rotational speed are obtained. This study is believed to be the start for the optimal design of the lubricating system in the automatic transmission.

Many research of elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) has been performed under the condition of steady state loading. However, mechanical elements undergo severe high loads that are in the fluctuating modes of frequency and amplitude. Conventional numerical method for the circular contact of EHL study has the difficulty in making the film thickness and pressure of EHL converged in high loads of steady state as well as fluctuating loading conditions. In this work, multigrid multilevel method are used for the stable convergence of film pressure and thickness under the conditions of high as well as varying loads, and very stable solutions of film behaviors with elastic deformation are obtained. Several results of dynamic loading condition are shown and compared with those of steady state condition in the aspects of circular EHL film thickness and pressure.
