One item on the national policy agenda is “Korean Defense Industry as a New Motive Power for the Economic Growth.” This requires that the Korean defense industry be effectively managed and fostered to promote the economic growth. The objective of this paper is to suggest the policies for revitalizing it. For this purpose, we review its current issues, introduce the new defense industrial policy of the government. We also test the feasibility of the governmental policy using some historical data available. The result shows that the governmental policy is timely and suitable. Finally, we suggest some desirable policy initiative for upgrading its competency. 정부가 국정과제 중 하나로 추진하는 ‘방위산업의 신경제성장 동력화’는 방위산업의 경제적 효과를 강조하고 있다. 이러한 관점에서 본고는 한국 방위산업의 발전과정을 개관하여 현실태 및 문제점을 살펴보고, 『방위산업육성 기본계획(’08~’12)』의 주요내용을 소개하였다. 이어서, 통계자료를 활용한 분석을 통해 『방위산업육성 기본계획(’08~’12)』은 방위산업 전반에 대한 과거의 비판과 반성을 토대로 현실적합적으로 작성되었음을 확인하였다. 끝으로, 한국 방위산업의 발전을 위한 정책대안으로 범정부적 차원, 국방부 차원, 방위사업청 차원에서 여섯 가지의 대안을 제시하였다.

정부는 ‘방위산업의 신경제성장 동력화’를 국정과제 중의 하나로 추진하고 있다. 이를 위하여 방위산업은 경제성장을 증진시키고 육성하기 위하여 보다 효율적으로 운영되어질 필요가 있다. 이러한 관점에서 본고는 한국 방위산업의 발전과정을 개관하여 현실태 및 문제점을 살펴보았고, 방위산업육성 기본계획에 대해 주요내용을 소개하고자 한다. 또한, 통계자료를 활용하여 방위산업육성 기본계획이 얼마나 적합하게 수립되었으며, 향후에도 방산업체의 경영성과에 어떠한 영향을 미칠 것인지를 실증분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 실증분석 결과, 방위산업육성 기본계획은 방위산업 전반에 대한 과거의 비판과 반성을 토대로 현실적합적으로 작성되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.
