The engine exhaust noise is mainly made of the pulsating gas flow and pulsating pressure at a very high pressure level. Frequently, this pulsating pressure level is out of the pressure level range which the linear acoustic theory is applicable. The conventional prediction method which is based on the linear acoustic theory gives an overestimate in comparison with results measured in operating engines. This paper, as the first step for solving this problem, proposes a non linear effect of pulsating pressure waves. A pulsating flow is studied experimentally through a pipe and the results are compared with the numerical ones obtained by a one-dimensional numerical scheme. The numerical scheme is utilized the method of characteristics to solve the general equations of one-dimensional unsteady gas flow. This analysis is then combined with boundary models. based on quasi-steady flow approach. to give a complete treatment of the flow behavior in the exhaust system. The noise characteristics of exhaust systems is analyze through radiated noise analysis. The predictions are compared with measured results and show a high degree of correlation in amplitude and phasing.<br/>

Flow characteristics of a compressible gas flow through a rotating disc-type rotary valve are investigated experimentally under various conditions. It is known that the mass flow rate through poppet valves of 4-stroke cycle engines and through piston valves of 2-stroke cycle engines decrease with increase in engine speed. Rotary valve is one means by which air may be made to flow intermittently through a pipe. In this paper disc-type rotary valves were used to experimentally analyze the decrease in flow rate at high rotation speeds and to determine what variables, other than rotational speed, give rise to the observed behaviour. These variables have been included in an empirical equation which is representative of the measured flow characteristics.<br/>

Numerical study on combusting flow is done for a tube nested burner. For the development of new burners of compact and low NOx emission, detailed flow and emission characteristics are studied with detailed chemical reaction mechanism and transport properties. It is found that the new burning technology could achieve better performance compared to conventional burning method and much research effort is needed to throughly understand and design real burner.
배기가스 재순환(EGR)을 이용한 폐타이어 소각에 대한 실험적 연구

An experimental study on combustion witn pyrolytic gas from waste tires and new burning method using exhaust gas recirculation was performed. Experiment on pyrolytic gasification and combustion of the gas was performed with a small pilot incinerator. To maintain active gasification reaction which resulted in the range of temperature 350℃ ~ 550℃, control of 1st and 2nd air flow rate was necessary and most important. Initiative experiment on exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), where the EGR rate was controlled by blower speed for constant chamber temperature about 204℃, was performed for pyrolysis gas with indirect combustion method. It showed some possibility of the application of EGR on gasification process control.
고온공기 공급에 따른 액체연료의 연소특성에 관한 실험적 연구

An experiment on the combustion characteristics of pre-heated air combustion with oil fuel is performed. With the high-temperature air supply, although real air flow rates are less than that of stoichiometric condition, stable distribution of high-temperature combustion region is obtained with increase of flame intensity. The flame temperature with pre-heated air is much higher than reference where the air is not pre-heated. When pre-heated air is introduced in the chamber, the temperature distribution in the chamber is more uniform in a high level. CO emission is decreased, but NOx emission is increased compared to the flame in a reference, although the amount is small. It is found that with the use of pre-heated air, the flame intensity and combustion region can be extended due to increase of the combustion intensity and the air flow velocity.

Numerical study on combusting flow is done for a swirl burner to understand the flame structure and NOx formation. With thermal NOx formation and detailed transport properties are used in the simulation. It is found that the NOx emission characteristics in swirl flames show that the amount of NOx emission in strong swirl flame is decreased about 60%, when compared to that of weak swirl flame, It is supposed that the formation of recirculation zone cause the reduction of resident time, which is primary factor on the NOx production.
