Behcet`s disease is a systemic vascular disorder induced by autoimmune mechanisms. As a vascular complication of Behcet`s disease, thrombophlebitis has been commonly reported. Stasis dermatitis results from prolonged venous insufficiency including thrombophlebitis, which implies the possibilities of association between stasis dermatitis and Behcet`s disease. We present a 51-year-old man with Behcet`s disease accompained with asymptomatic brownish ill-defined patch on the left leg. This case suggests that stasis dermatitis might be associated with Behcet`s disease by complication of vascular system.(Korean J Dermatol 2003;41(10) : 1374~1377)

N/A Background : It is believed that certain skin types of different age, ethnic group may be more susceptible to the effect of skin irritants than others. However, some previous studies found controversies among intra-, inter-individual variation along with the possibility of ethnic differences in irritation reaction. Objective : Thus, it is mandatory to explore the characteristics of irritant skin reaction in young and old Koreans with objective, standardized instrumental measurement techniques. Method : We have investigated the patterns of skin irritation between adolescent group (19 persons, average age 21.3 ± 2.3) and old group (18 persons, average age 61.0 ± 3.6) after physicochemical stimuli by using tape strippings (15, 30 times) and 24 hours SLS (sodium rauryl sulfate, 1% 0.5%) patch application with skin bioengineering measurements for color change(erythema index), TEWL(transepidermal water loss), capacitance and dermal microcirculation (Laser Doppler Flowmetry flux). Results : The intensity of irritation represented by skin bioengineering measurements showed 30 strippings > 1% SLS > 0.5% SLS > 15 strippings, respectively. The younger the less irritation response at different time-course. TEWL, erythema index and microvascular blood distribution (LDF flux) of old group reached the plateau faster and higher than adolescent group. Occlusive patch containing water induced a potential of irritation regardless of age group that might affect early interpretation of skin bioengineering results. Conclusion : Intensity of irritation reaction and its kinetic suggested the role of age-dependent change of skin. The standardization on skin bioengineering measurement techniques along with irritation methods is mandatory to explore further inter-individual differences of irritation reaction in Korean. This study was performed to assess the neuroprotective effects of methanolic extracts from sweet persimmon peel (PPE) against glutamate-induced cytotoxicity in hybridoma N18-RE-105 cells. The neuroprotective effects of PPE in N18-RE-105 cells were measured using the MTT reduction assay, LDH release assay, and phase-contrast microscopy. The results of the MTT reduction assay showed that treating cells with 500 μg/mL PPE resulted in cell viability of 66.9%. Additionally, the morphological changes and the results of the LDH release assay showed that glutamate-induced damage to nerve cells was strongly inhibited by PPE. GSH content of N18-RE-105 cells was 3.5 μM compared to that of the control, whereas pretreatment with 500 μg/mL PPE increased GSH content by 4.7 μM. PPE was fractionated with hexane, and that layer had the highest neuroprotective effects in glutamate-stressed N18-RE-105 cells. In conclusion, our data showed that glutamate potentiated the effects of N18-RE-105 cell death by a mechanism involving oxidative stress. Therefore, PPE may be a potential candidate for prevention and therapy of neurodegenerative diseases.

N/A Backgrounds : Pityrosporum (P.) ovale is a member of the cutaneous microflora, and is associated with several dermatologic diseases. Little is known about the mechanism by which P. ovale causes these dermatoses, but it has been supposed to be associated with immunologic response. The epidermis is largely composed of keratinocytes, and they not only play an important structural part in forming a physical barrier to microorganisms, but also are important functionally in mediating cutaneous immune reaction by secreting various cytokines. Objectives : There have been few studies on the interaction between fungi and keratinocytes, especially the effect of P. ovale on the production of cytokines by human keratinocytes. This study is to evaluate the effects of P. ovale on pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-lα (IL-lα), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) producted by human keratinocytes. Methods : Normal human keratinocytes (NHK) from neonatal foreskin were suspended in culture medium with different concentrations of the P. ovale extract (0.01, 1, 10, 100㎍/㎖). The production of IL-lα, TNF-α and GM-CSF after 24 hours treatment were somiquantitated by RT-PCR. Time-course changes of the cytokines were also observed until 72 hours (0, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 hours). NHKs were treated with P. ovale culture supernatant (0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1.O㎖) for 24 hours, and the cytokines were measured by RT-PCR and ELISA. Results : IL-lα and GM-CSF were increased by treatment with P. ovale extract as a dose-dependent manner. But TNF-α production was not affected by the treatement. The level of IL-1α was steadily increased with its maximum at 48 hours. The level of GM-CSF was increased for 48 hours and became decreased thereafter. NHKs treated with P. ovale culture supernatant showed the increase of IL-lα and GM-CSF synthesis as a dose-dependent manner. Conclusions : P. ovale induced the pro-inflammatory cytokines in normal keratinocytes, which is supposed to induce inflammatory response by the organism in the skin.
