Finite element analysis was performed to analyze structural safety of a new heavy-duty direct injection diesel engine. A half section of the in-line 6-cylinder engine was selected as computational domain. A mapping method was devised to project heat transfer coefficients from CFD results of engine coolant flow onto the FE model. The accurate setting of thermal boundary condition on the FE model resulted in improved temperature distribution. Numerical solutions of cylinder bore distortion and stresses were obtained by using the thermal condition. High Cycle Fatigue was analyzed by assuming the engine was operated under the five loading conditions repeatedly; assembly force, assembly force with thermal loading, alternating maximum gas pressure loading at each cylinder combined with assembly force and thermal loading. Distribution of safety factor was calculated by using a Haigh diagram for which the maximum and the minimum stresses were selected from the five loading cases.

The PM regeneration performance of DPF installed in a passenger diesel car was analytically studied using a commercial CFD code. The characteristics of temperature distribution, pressure drop and PM filtering/regeneration in the DPF were predicted with the input data from vehicle emission tests at an NEDC condition.

Characteristics of internal air flow through a DPF channel have been studied using a commercial CFD code. An analytical model including the change of physical properties of DPF has been tried using the prediction of pressure drop from the change of channel wall thickness and porosity. It has been shown that the pressure drop through a DPF is increased for the thicker channel wall and lower DPF porosity.

In this analytical study on the engine coolant flow of a heavy-duty diesel engine with 4 valves and linear-type 8 liter 6 cylinders, the characteristics of pressure drop and engine cooling performance with the additional coolant passages between cylinder blocks have been investigated. Since the most part of pressure drop is caused by the coolant flow passages inside a cylinder head and cylinder blocks for this type of heavy-duty diesel engines, the advantage of pressure drop is just 2.6% and the characteristics of heat transfer and the distribution of coolant velocities in the head part show little differences in case of additional coolant passages. Thus the coolant flow passages between cylinder blocks make little contribution on the cooling performance of heavy-duty diesel engines.

Numerical study has been conducted for improving air flow characteristics in the exhaust aftertreatment system of diesel-fueled passenger cars by changing length and shape of a DPF diffuser using a commercial CFD code. The results of axial velocity and static pressure distributions along with air flow uniformity results show that a diffuser shape like 2D or 3D function type is proposed for the better air flow patterns in front of a DPF.

The principal objective of this study was to assess the bone density and processed food intake behavior of middle-aged and elderly women in the Seoul area. The subjects were assigned to one of the following groups on the basis of BMI: namely, the underweight, normal, and overweight groups. The results are summarized as follows: The average BMI and systolic blood pressure of the three groups were 19.0, 127.3 mmHg; 22.4, 132.8 mmHg; and 26.8, 136.1 mmHg respectively. The BQI and T-scores of the three groups were as follows: 56.6, -2.50; 62.3, -2.22; 66.0, -2.03 respectively. The bone status of the three groups, in terms of the percentage of normal and osteoporosis, were 9.5%, 52.4%; 8.3% 33.0%; and 8.8%, 23.6% respectively. We noted no significant differences in processed food intake (frozen, cold and can processed food, instant and convenience store food, basic side dishes) behavior among the three groups. However, we recorded a negative value between processed food intake and bone density (BQI, T-score, %young adult, Z-score, %age-matched) generally. In particular, ramyeon (r=-0.1574, p<0.05) and cup-ramyeon (r=-0.1996, p<0.05) intake were significantly associated with the T-scores of bone density levels. The results of this study revealed that processed food intake was not generally desirable for healthy bone. Thus, practically and systematically organized education regarding a good and healthy dietary life is highly recommended.
