To meet requirements for low emission and improved fuel economy gasoline engines, Kia is carrying out the measurements and analysis of intermal phenomena in combustion chamber of gasoline engines, especially including a Spark Ignited Direct Injection engine. We introduce several research activities such as the study on air motion, spray impingement and flame propagation using PIV, LDV and ICCD equipments with a visualized single cylinder engine.<br/>

For development of SDI(Spark-ignited Direct Injection) engine, stratified mixture formation with adequate strength at spark plug was required in wide range of engine operating conditions. So, spray structure under high ambient pressure and spray distribution after impingement on piston bowl in motoring engine was visualized by using laser equipment. Also, in-cylinder bulk flow structure was measured by using PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) system. Counter-rotating tumble port and bowl piston was found effective to conserve bulk motion directed to spark plug in compression. In addition, mask assached near valve seat in intake port was proposed to attenuate conventional tumble component and enhance counter-rotating tumble component.<br/>

Hydrogen car "Sung Kyun No.1" which adapted direct injection method to avoid back<br/> fire and used high pressure hydrogen tank has been developed.<br/> The developed hydrogen car was not different in a view points of startability,<br/> drivability, and safety from those of conventional gasoline engine. More studies are needed concerning some technical problems such as fuel injection valves, fuel supply<br/> and storage systems.<br/>

Some considerations of Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV) technology were studied for getting good results from measurements of in-cylinder flow fields. And bulk air flow induced into the cylinder through two intake ports was measured on horizontal and vertical sections of the transparent cylinder in steady flow rig. Also, two-dimensional velocity distributions were compared with computed results from Computational Fluid Dynamics code. The change of bulk air flow with the geometry of piston top face was observed in a transparent engine.<br/>

Some considerations of Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) technology were studied for calculating of steady and unsteady in-cylinder flow fields. And the changes of flow field according to variations of configuration of intake port generating reverse tumble and curved piston to control purposed bulk flow were calculated. Also, CFD results were compared to experimental results using LDV, PIV and good validations were met. As a result, reverse tumble flow generated during intake process was preserved by configuration of curved piston while base and reverse tumbles were diminished at the end of compression stroke in case of flat top piston. In addition, it will be needed to optimize the fuel mixture distribution based on these results.<br/>
