Fluid displacement and BTV(Brake Torque Variation) during brake apply and drag torque after brake release are three important performance characteristics of a caliper design. Fluid displacement is the extra brake fluid volume needed to achieve certain braking pressure and higher displacement means longer travel of brake pedal. Drag is the residual torque of the rotor, and is affecting the fuel efficiency of a vehicle. Also BTV induces the vibration of pedal, making drivers feel anxious. To analytically evaluate those important performance characteristics of a caliper brake, the integrated simulation model is developed and presented in this study. The model considers the significant factors, including lining stiffness and hysteresis, seal/groove characteristic, stick-slide behavior between the seal and piston and hydraulic pressure effect. The model is validated with various physical test data. The sensitivity study with this model would help brake engineers evaluate design alternatives in terms of brake performance and furthermore this model is very effective to do the trade-off among various design alternatives to meet the brake performance.
