In this study a tracked vehicle is idealized as a 2-dimensional 9-degree-of-freedom model which takes into account the effects of HSU units, torsion bars, and track. For the model, equations of motion are derived u:;ing Kane' s equation. By using the equations of motion. a numerical example is solved and the results are compared to those obtained by using a general purpose multibody dynamic analysis program. The<br/> comparison study shows the reasonable coherence between the two results. which confirms the effectiveness<br/> of the model. With the model. dynamic response optimization is carried out by using IDOL I.6D program. The objective function is the peak value of the vertical acceleration of the vehicle at the driver seat. and the side constraints are the wheel travel limits, the ground clearance. and the limits of other design variables. Three sets of design variables are used to carry out the optimization. The results show the attenuation of the acceleration peak value. Thus the procedure presented in this study can be utilized for the design improvement of the real system.<br/>

This paper presents simulation results of a vehicle with a flexible frame.<br/> The mass and stiffness data are obtained by a finite element analysis<br/> program and used in a multibody dynamics program. The vehicle<br/> consists of a sprung mass, a flexible frame, suspensions, and tires, and has total 166 degrees of freedom.<br/> The outputs are compared with those of a vehicle with a rigid frame. The results shows that reaction forces between bodies are significantly different, but displacements, and velocities are not much different for the vehicle. Acceleration is almost same at low speeds but quite different peak values at high speed. Phase lag is also observed from the results.<br/> Computational efforts needed for the analysis are compared too.<br/>
