NMEA 2000 is adopted as standard network for SOLAS ship by IMO. NMEA 2000 is based on CAN network exchanging data in real-time. NMEA 2000 should be able to convert and to receive various protocols. Conventional processor is difficult to converting various protocol in real-time because of possession problems on processor and memory. In this paper, multi protocol converter is implemented using FPGA for solving these problems. For receiving other protocols, USB, Ethernet and UART IP are mounted on FPGA. NMEA 2000 data is received through CAN port on FPGA, and received NMEA 2000 data is converted into other data. Then, converted data sends to PC through USB, Ethernet and UART port. NMEA 2000 monitoring program is developed to verify that data on different network are converted correctly. Converted NMEA 2000 data is confirmed by NMEA 2000 monitoring program.

In this paper, the FPGA-based SoC board (Xilinx virtex-4 ML401 EVM) is adopted to control electrical power inverter system. For marine application, its performance is shown on PC-based system for monitoring electrical characteristics of a power inverter using by the NMEA2000 protocol. This power inverter system is achieved in Real-Time monitoring and control by dual micro-processor operation on embedded FPGA-based SoC board. One micro processor is for control (control processor) electrical power inverter using by PWM signal. And the other micro-processor (communication processor) is for communication with PC-based monitoring system. The two-processor is communicating each other using by dual-portram(DPRAM). PC-based system user can control and monitor information of the electrical power inverter via NMEA2000 based communication processor. Control and monitoring information includes the inverter status and configuration. SoC board converts this information to Parameter Group Numbers (PGNs) in the NMEA2000 protocol. This system can be applied to marine power electronics for distributed power generation, transmission or regulation systems on the ship.

NMEA1000 protocol known as IEC61162-3 of Multi-talker, Multi-listener, PnP communication is adopted as standard network for SaLAS ship by ISO in 2008 for e-navigation ages. NMEA2000 network uses well known CAN in physical layer. In this paper address claim function is implemented for protocol converter device which can be used easily in combination with CPU of non network device. We are going to implement full function of NMEA2000 protocol and provide guideline to develop ship equipment to be networked easily.
