The melting phenomena of horizontal cylindrical ice-bar immersed in water and air concentrically in the cylinder are experimentally investigated for the temperature range from $3.5^{\circ}C\;to\;2.5^{\circ}C$. The shapes of the melting ice-bar are recorded photographically by the shadowgraph method. The shadowgraphs of the melting ice-bar show that water adjacent to the bar flows upward for the temperature range from $3.5^{\circ}C\;to\;5.8^{\circ}C$ while above $5.8^|\circ}C$ the flow is downward direction. The local and average Nusselt numbers are obtoined with the recorded shadowgraphs and comparator. Melting shapes of the ice-bar in the air show the vortex motion in the bottom portion of the bar, whereas no vortex motion appears in the bottom portion when the bar is melted in the water.

Atherosclerotic arteries show a tendency to undergo compensatory vascular enlargement during the early stage of plaque accumulation. The objective of the present study is to investigate the relationship between the compensatory remodelling of the stenosed coronary artery and hemodynamic stresses. Two models for the compensatory remodelling are a pre-stenotic dilation and a post-stenotic dilation models. The boundary condition at inlet is set to have the same flow rate for two models. and the wall shear stresses in two models are calculated by the computer simulation. The peak wall shear stress on the post-stenotic model is higher than that of the pre-stenotic model. Two recirculation zones are generated in the pre-stenotic model, and the zones in the pre-stenotic model are smaller than those in the post-stenotic model. Variation of the wall shear stress in the pre-stenotic model is lower than those in the post-stenotic model.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of the hemodynamics on the morphological changes of the human endothelial cells due to the blood flow by in vitro experiment and computer simulation. The morphological changes of the endothelial cells due to the t10w shear stress were observed in the laminar t10w chamber as a function of the exposure time. The observed shapes of the endothelial cells are used to the model shapes of the endothelial cells for numerical study and the pressure and the wall shear stress variations around the endothelial cells are calculated from the numerical results. The endothelial cells elongate along the t10w direction and lessen their heights in the flow field to reduce the pressure and the wall shear stress on the surface.
