The purpose of the current paper is to optimize the FIS position in order to prevent airbag malfunctioning from inaccuracy of air bag sensibility during frontal and offset vehicle collision under various velocities. In this paper, the frontal and offset crash finite element models are firstly constructed as regards the 12mile frontal versus 25mile offset crash, and 18mile frontal crash versus 40mile offset crash. Then, the parameter design scheme of Taguchi method is used to obtain the robust optimal position of the FIS. As a result, the robust optimal position of the FIS which is installed in the FEM carrier upper member is suggested considering the noise effect such as the vehicle weight, strength and stiffness of front side member and bumper back beam. Moreover, it shows that discrimination of crash pulse as regards the various frontal crash modes above mentioned is enhanced dramatically for the air bag deployment. Current paper will contribute in various technologies - minimize cost and the number of real test for airbag sensing, reducing the target period for regulation and product development, and prevention for Product Liability - providing solution for uncertainty of airbag activation under various collision possibilities.
