경제투표 하위차원의 상호작용: 5-7회 지방선거의 사례

한국의 지방선거에서 경제투표의 세 가지 하위차원은 유의미한 투표결정요인 이었는가? 세 가지 하위차원의 경제투표는 어떻게 상호연동하여 작동하는가? 이 논문은 역대 지방선거에서의 경제투표 하위차원들의 상호 연동하는 맥락을 규명하고, 내생성 문제가 제기되고 있는 회고적 국가경제평가 대신 새로운 합의이슈 변수로서 불평등 인식을 제시한다. 경험적 분석결과 합의이슈 경제투표, 정책선호 경제투표, 자산기반 경제투표의 유의미성은 각각 선거마다 다르게 나타났지만, 세 차원이 상호작용하여 복합적으로 투표에 영향을 미치고 있다는 것을 밝혔다. 또한 제7회 지방선거에서는 불평등 인식이 새로운 합의이슈로서 다른 경제투표의 하위차원과 상호연동하여 작동하고 있음도 발견하였다. 이 연구의 발견은 한국 유권자들의 경제투표가 지방선거에서 유의미하게 작동하고 있으며, 경제투표의 하위차원에서의 상호연동성을 포착할 때 더 명확하게 드러나고 있다는 점을 밝혔다는 점에서 그 의의가 있다. Are three dimensions of economic voting a significant determinant of voter’s behavior? How do these dimensions interact with each other? This article examines how sub-dimensions of economic voting affect the incumbent support in local elections in South Korea. Existing studies on economic voting mainly focused on the independent effect of three economic vote dimensions; valence economic voting, positional economic voting, and patrimonial economic voting. This paper identifies the interplay of above three economic vote dimensions in the previous 5-7th local elections. Our empirical results show that three dimensions not only have independent effects but also have interaction effects amongst each other. Furthermore, we also suggested ‘voter’s perception of inequality’ as a proxy of valence economic voting. In the 7th local election, the perception of inequality as a new measure of valence voting has interacted with other dimensions of economic voting.
