In this paper, a study was conducted on the motor shape design in consideration of efficiency, which is the main design requirement of BLDC motor for engine cooling fan, and cogging torque, which is the main noise source of the motor. A comparative analysis was conducted using the electromagnetic field finite element method for the effects of various design factors constituting each motor shape on the efficiency and cogging torque. Since the influence of motor design factors on efficiency and cogging torque has an alternating effect, an optimization model was derived using Taguchi’s optimization method and RSM (response surface method) to consider them at the same time. The final model designed through this study was analyzed for performance characteristics through the finite element method (FEM), which is a numerical method of electromagnetic field analysis, and the validity of the design and analysis was verified through experiment after making prototype motors.
