Demanding excessive settlement or claim for medical expenses when a victim is injured by WAD(Whiplash Associated Disorders) in a minor traffic accident that collided at low-speed comprises a social problem. Experimental studies on the possibility of injury on a rear-end collision at low-speed had been conducted in and out of the country. As the results of these studies showed, the change in speed of the struck vehicle is the most important factor determining whether the occupants are injured or not. In order to estimate the change in speed of the struck vehicle, one needs the coefficient of restitution that fits the low-speed rear-end impact cases. In this study, we used five vehicles to measure the speed changes in the vehicles in line with six low-speed rear-end collision cases with about 8 km/h speed change in the struck vehicles. We obtain the coefficient of restitution in low-speed collision situations and verify the reliability of the coefficient of restitution by applying this to PC-Crash simulation, a traffic accident analysis program.

In the case of vehicle fall and rollover accidents, crashes often occur at high speeds. Directly after the crash, the vehicle’s movement varies rapidly, and the occupants’ movements also change highly according to the vehicle’s motion. In addition, if the occupants did not wear their seatbelts, they would leave the vehicle with an increased probability of death. Impact spot, impact speed, and impact position are commonly considered important factors in general vehicle accidents, but if the vehicle falls or rolls over, which does not commonly occur, there is a need to know the falling time point and the route by which the vehicle reached the final position. In this study, vehicle fall and rollover accident reconstruction was performed using PC-CrashTM, where event data recorder(EDR) data exist, and by comparing the EDR rollover angle with the PC-CrashTM roll angle, reliability evaluation of the accident reconstruction simulation was performed.

According to the Automobile Management Act, the EDR data of vehicles launched after 2016 should be made accessible to the public. Based on the Ministry of Land statistics, there were 54.03 million cars registered after 2016, thereby accounting for approximately 42 % of the number of cars registered between 2011 and 2018. The speed before impact is the most important factor in the case of a vehicle-to-vehicle collision. If it is possible to retrieve the EDR data, its impact speed can be extracted easily. Otherwise, we need to calculate the impact speed by using some evidence. This paper reconstructed the vehicle accident by utilizing the PC-CRASH collision optimal function with the damaged spot of the vehicle and the final stop position of the cars. We calculated the impact speed and compared this estimated impact speed with the real impact speed by using the reconstructed accident scenario. The reliability of the simulation was evaluated based on this.

In the event of a pedestrian accident, the pedestrian is at high risk of severe injury that may result in death due to lack of safety equipment. In a pedestrian accident, both the impact position of the pedestrian and vehicle velocity just before the impact are important factors that need to be calculated. The accident is reliably recreated through the MADYMO simulation by using the speed before the impact, the injured area of the pedestrian, and the damaged state of the vehicle. However, the reliability and utilization of MADYMO are not yet confirmed. Therefore, this paper recreated the accident by using MADYMO in order to demonstrate the reliability and utilization of the simulation results under the situation where the accident video exists. The initial impact position and dummy posture were set by using accident videos and photos of the damaged vehicle. Furthermore, vehicle speed was calculated by investigating the accident video and considering the thrown distance of the pedestrian. Through the MADYMO simulation, the thrown distance of the human dummy model was compared with a real accident. In addition, the difference between the pedestrian behavior and dummy model’s behavior was compared. This study indicates that the MADYMO is reliable in using simulation results based on thrown distance, physical evidence, etc.

The EDR(Event Data Recorder) is a part of the ACU(Airbag Control Unit) functions mounted on a vehicle. EDR data have pre-crash data and post-crash data. Pre-crash data are recorded within 5 sec from time zero(AE) with 0.5 sec resolution, and reveal vehicle speed, engine rotation speed, throttle opening, brake pedal operation, acceleration pedal position and steering angle, etc. Using this EDR data, the investigation of a traffic accident can become more objective and scientific. Crash tests of three vehicles equipped with EDR function had been performed successfully. Evaluation of EDR data reliability had also been performed using Vbox and PC-Crash’s sequence table function. Based on the results, we could confirm EDR data’s reliability and availability for Traffic Accident Analysis by the series of this process.
