The OH molecule is a highly reactive combustion intermediate and relatively abundant in combustion systems. It also has the availability of convenient UV -laser systems to excite the A²Σ-X²?? electronic transition. The spectroscopic parameters describing this transition are well known. In this research, the OH molecule was measured in the laminar flame burner and constant volume combustion chamber(CVCC) in order to use it as the fundamental data for studying combustion phenomena. The LIF images of the OH molecule in the laminar 리ame burner were caught by using KrF excimer laser and ICCD camera. The natural fluorescence<br/> of OH was also measured by the interference filter(310 nm) and spectrometer in the CVCC at different equivalence ratios.

Two dimensional images of mixture distributions in a optical accessible engine was acqured during intake and compression processes using planar laser-induced fluorescence(PLIF). A optical glass filter(WG305) was used to eliminate Rayleigh scattering and the fluorescence was imaged onto ICCD camera. The engine was fueled with iso-octane, which was mixed with 5% commercial gasoline as a dopant and operated under idling conditions. The fuel injection timings were differed at 0, 360, 450deg and the amount of injection was varied as A/F=17.5 and 18.5. The dopant fluoresced by the change of mixture concentrations inhomogeneously. The late injections showed more homogeneous distributions during compression process.<br/>

Two dimensional images of OH radical distributions in an optical accessible engine were acquired using planar laser induced fluorescence(PLIF) method during combustion process. A broadband filter(UG 11) was used to eliminate Rayleigh scattering from laser light and OH fluorescence was imaged onto ICCD camera. OH radical is excited on Q₁(11) and P₂(8) line. The engine was fueled with special grade iso-octane, which does not fluorescence. Wrinkled flame fronts which imply turbulent flame is very clear. In some images flame islands are observed.

The backfire could be caused by the backflow of hot burned gas from the cylinder into the intake port. Especially. in the case of gaseous fuel engines. the possibility of backfire occurrence is higher since the ignition temperature is lower than that of liquid fuel.<br/> In this study. prior to conversion of gasoline engine to LPG engine. the backflow was measured at four different valve timings(type Ⅰ,Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ) in a gasoline engine. To quantify the amount of backflow. hot wire anemometry was adopted and its signal was analyzed as the change of temperature and flow in the intake port.<br/> It was found that the backflow was decreased with increasing the engine load. When the intake valve timing was retarded. the backflow was not found nearly and the power was decreased a little at low engine speed.<br/>

CNG engine, well favored as a excellent engine fuel, can be operated in bi-fuel, dual fuel, and single fuel dedicated CNG modes. Having several merits in the viewpoints of the wide driving range due to the running possibility by using only diesel fuel, and no major modification on the engine, mechanical system is developed for the conversion of 3.5L 4 cylinder diesel engine installed in 2.5 ton truck. <br/> In this study, we have tested the characteristics of power, fuel consumption, and emission with both prototype engine and vehicle.<br/>

The effects of tumble and swirl flows on the combustion were investigated exprementally in a 4-valve SI engine. The tunble flow pattems were generated by various intake ports of different entry angle; 25˚, 20˚ and 15˚. Inclined tumble(swirl) flows were induced by three different swirl control valves. The initial flame propagation was visualized by an ICCD camera and its image were analyzed to compare the enflamed area and displacement of initial flames. The combustion duration was calculated by heat release analysis of the pressure in an operating engine.<br/> It was found that there is a correlation between the stronger tumble during induction and turbulence levels at the time of ignition resulting in faster flame davelopment. Inclined tumble was proved to be more beneficial than the pure tumlbe for faster and stable combustion under lean mixture conditions, which was confirmed by faster propagating flame images and comtustion durations.<br/>
