This essay argues that William Godwin’s second novel, St. Leon: A Tale of the Sixteenth Century, reveals an irony in the author’s pursuit of the ideal of universal benevolence. Published at the end of the eighteenth century and a year after the publication of the third edition of Political Justice, the novel introduces Godwin’s revised political agenda that puts more emphasis on the personal than before. Its argument for the significance of domestic love as expressed in the preface, however, is betrayed and undermined by its narrative. The novel’s protagonist, Reginald, can seek to benefit the whole humanity only after he abandons his family while he acquires supernatural powers of limitless wealth and eternal life from a stranger; but even then, his project of universal benevolence faces utter failure as his idea of helping the poor is strictly founded upon classist elitism and his own sense of alienation from others. On the other hand, however, I argue that the novel is also an emblem of Godwin’s constant search for a proper form of Justice that departs from his initial, rigid version of it, by way of seeking potentialities in peripheral characters such as Hector (a Black slave) and Charon (a dog). While these characters’ unfortunate deaths may represent the symbolic death of the ideal form of universal benevolence, Godwin’s pursuit of utopian state finds its legacy in his daughter’s novel, Frankenstein, which repeats both St. Leon’s idealism (in the preface) and skepticism (in the narrative).

In this work, gas response of Zinc oxide (ZnO)/Si heterojunction gas sensor was analyzed using 3D TCAD simulation. Gas sensing event was simply modeled using a negative fixed charge and the target gas was assumed as hydrogen gas. The ZnO/Si heterojunction gas sensor exhibits improved gas response than the pristine Si pn junction based sensor. The improved gas response is ascribed by collecting electrons, generated by redox reaction at the ZnO and the pn junction, at the ZnO/Si hetero interface. This study will be helpful to understand gas-sensing mechanism of ZnO/Si heterojunction gas sensor.
