This study is an overview of current status of rational choice theories in political science. The concept of rationality is discussed in relation to the linkage between individual choices and emergent group properties. Also examined is the methodological characteristics of the rational choice theories such as methodological individualism, cultural context of rational choice, and deductive logic. Different forms of rational choice models are also presented; (1) decision theory, (2) axiomatic-choice theory, (3) spatial model, (4) game theory, (5) public goods and collective action theory. Finally, the application of rational choice models in political science is examined based on several recent case studies done by John Rawls, Michael Taylor, Adam Przeworski, and Pierre Birnbaum.

This paper reexamines the paradigm of functional analysis in social sciences, and relates its mode of application in political science. Particular emphasis is placed on; 1) the logic of functional analysis as presented by C. Hempel, 2) Functional causal imagery as developed by A. Stinchombe's reverse causal links, 3) evolutionary explanations dealing with long-range adaptive processes. Structural-functionalism, one of the predominant modes of political analysis in the 1960s, has been criticized on both ideological and methodological grounds. What is needed is an impartical account of merits and demerits of this distinct mode of analysis. Thus an attempt was made to show that functionalism can deal with the problems of change by focusing on the structural incongruities of social systems. Methodologically, even thought the theoretical status of functional statements falls far short of the ideal of deductive system, it can be hardly denied that functional approach, as a concatenated framework (as suggested by M. Kaplan), can be a positive contribution to theory construction with its taxonomical strength and macroscopic comprehension of the totalities of socio-political phenomena.
