This study compared the relative effectiveness of two most prevalent augmentative communication modes, Picture Exchange Communication System(PECS) and sign language, for improving word vocalizations in children with autism, Three boys with autism using none or less than 10 of functional words, in the age of 5 to 6, participated in the study. The study used an alternating treatments design within each subject: initial base line phase, the best-treatment phase, maintenance, and generalization. Data was collected using event recording system for occurrence of spontaneous word vocalizations through the all the sessions of PECS and sing language interventions. The results showed that sign language produced more enhanced spontaneous word vocalizations than PECS for two participants with few functional words through all the phase of the two AAC interventions. The phase Ⅰ to Ⅲ of two interventions did not produced word vocalizations for the other participant who did not use speech. Word vocalizations emerged and increased from the phase Ⅱ of sign language after the two participants mastered the basic principles of communication and movements of sign language corresponding to preferred items. The results of this study suggest that sign language could be a better choice as an effective augmentative communication system for children who have few functional words. Further research comparing to later phases of PECS and sign language is needed to determine the relative effectiveness as augmentative communication systems for children in preverbal stage.
