Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: Burlesque로서의 가능성

In the first sense, medieval romance is story of adventure and love. Its basic paradigm is expressed in the principle, “The knight ride out alone to seek adventure”. The quest motif is fundamental and practiced in pursuit of a private ideal. Ideal chivalrous knight grows in self-knowledge and achieves fulfillment through the overcoming obstacles. And (courtly) love plays important part in knight's self-achievement. Also, Supernatural and marvellous elements including dragon, giant, pagan and magic, are particular property in romance. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, idealized Arthur and Camelot's knights, seen in Arthurian romances, become “boyish” and “beardless” as emergence of Green Knight. Green knight proposes a christmas game, beheading, to Arthur. Instead of Arthur, Gawain accepts the suggestion. And reader's expectation for romance is heighten by Gawain’s adventure which is originated by accepting Green Knight’s suggestion. But, soon, reader’s expectation is frustrated by Gawain-poet’s control. The poet boils down Gawain's adventure into 11 lines. Instead, the poet presents mutation of romance to readers. The poet juxtaposes effeminate Arthur and his knights with gentle Green Knight. And he puts ideal chivalrous Gawain, who starts extra-personal quest, in the beginning. But Gawain becomes just human being with flesh and blood. He is embarrassed by lady Bercilak’s temptation that can not be accepted by chivalric knight. And this is enabled by marvellous element, like castle of Hautdesert and green girdle. Readers recognize these elements as mysterious and magical effect as other romances. However, these can be explained reasonably. Castle is “natural one, that when riding through a forest it is impossible to see more than a few yards ahead”(Cooper 288). Green girdle, gifted by beautiful lady, is not a magic one but just girdle. And Gawain's(also readers') expectation for deadly test - mortal beheading - in green chapel turns out only the symbol of a self-realization. By showing the reader that even Gawain, a seeming incarnation of knighthood, is only a man, the poet reveals that the medieval knighthood can not be a worldly human code. And this is worked by burlesqued romance. The poet concludes that even the idealized knight, Gawain, is only a human being with flesh and blood.

The medieval romances can be roughly defined as the quest of the knight who rides forth to seek adventure. They have the marvellous adventures of a chivalrous and heroci knight. The knight goes on a quest, fighting and defeating monsters and giants. However, the courtly love has only secondary function. Women's images are also described as typical and conventional supporting role. They are silent, powerless and even decorative in the most of romances. The images follow tradition imposed by a male-dominated society. But, in The Wife of Bath's Tale and Lanval, the heroines take part in voicing their disapproval of that tradition. They want the plot of romances to be led by themselves.

Though praised as a near-perfect Christian knight, Sir Gawain makes several mistakes. Among them, the gravest may be that he breaks his promise with Bercilak in the game of exchanging gifts by hiding the green belt. In the final stage, his sin is revealed and he is forgiven on the ground that he loved his own life too much. Gawain regrets what he has done, swearing that he would never forget the lesson until the end of his life. Unlike this attitude, however, Gawain never changes what he has said about women after he has been heard that the green girdle plot was planted. His curse against women is not different from the views of his days-that all women, each as the second Eve, are the agents of the devil. In this sense, Gawain is just another antifeminist hero who shares a common belief with his fellow men. The paper pursues the antifeminist aspect of the Sir Gawain by following the hero’s unheroic behaviors as long as women and temptation are concerned.
