Recently, the advanced emergency braking system (AEBS) has become an important issue in the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) to avoid pedestrian-to-car collisions. AEBS can prevent car accidents and reduce damages. The most important factor of AEBS is automatic pedestrian detection with high accuracy. A novel CCD and IR sensor fusion scheme is proposed instead of a single camera for accurate 24-hour detection capability. Dempster-Shafer theory (DST) and day/night time recognition information can provide stable pedestrian detection. Outdoor experimental results show upgraded performance regardless of time of day.
