Oxygen sensors taken form the aftereatment systems of 4 vehicles which had been aged in domestic filed were examined for aging effects on emissions using a idle engine bench. Also the artificial sensor signal generated by fuction generator was supplied to ECU, instead of oxygen sensor to simulated aging effects of oxygen sensor. This study shows that reduction of amplitude, deformation and shift of mean value of aged sensors seriousely affect on the engine out emissions and the performance of TWC.

The sensors were then cut into each layers along their components and characterized for poisoning, surface area<br/> and morphology. This study shows that amplitude and mean value of aged sensors are<br/> seriously affected by high temperature and oil components of exhaust gas.

To overcome the shortage of conventional TWC that is activated at high temperature, higher than 250˚C , photocatalyst is considered as a new technology. Because the photocatalytic reaction of photocatalyst is not a thermo mechanical reaction, it is not necessary to heat the system to start the reaction. It can be activated just by ultra violet light that includes wavelengths shorter than 400 nanometers even at ambient temperature. In this study photocatalytic reduction of hydrocarbon was investigated with a model gas test. To understand the effects of co-existence gases on the hydrocarbon reduction by photoreaction, CO and NO, 02, H2O gases those are components of exhaust gases of gasoline engine are supplied with C₃H??/N ₂ to a photoreactor. The photoreactor contains Ti02 photocatalyst powders and a UV bulb. The results show that oxygen is the most important factor to reduce HC emission with photocatalyst. Photocatalyst seems to have a good probability for automotive application to reduce cold start HC emissions.

As a part of stringent emission regulations, OBD on a converter is requested by EU and CARB. It demands that MIL is light-on to inform the failure to the driver when the converter is failed in its function. Usually dual oxygen sensor method is used for converter OBD. For this, detail methods, like amplitude ratio, time delay and frequency ratio methods are adapted for vehicle application. Actually, the cars produced later than MY94 for US market are using one of these methods.<br/> In this study, OSCs of converters are investigated with an absolute measuring method. The converters are aged with a furnace aging, an engine bench aging and vehicle aging method to represent various aging condition in field applications. An OBO index that is used for TLEVs regulation is also investigated to find a relation between two parameters. The relations of these parameters with THC emission on vehicle are evaluated.

Because UV wavelength lights can activate photocatalysts, plasma is used as a light source of a photocatalytic reactor. Even though plasma has good intensity for photo reaction, substrate of catalyst coating was limited by the geometry of plasma generator. Usually bead type substrate was used for a pack bed type reactor. Honeycomb monolith type substrate was used with UV lamps instead plasma, due to the light penetration the honeycomb monolith length was too short to show good activity. In this study a photocatalytic reactor, which is using a honeycomb monolith substrate, was investigated with plasma as an activation light source. As a parametric study the effects of following factors on plasma generation and power consumption are examined; supply voltage, substrate length, environment condition, catalyst loading and ratio. Using the test results, the practicability test was done with simulated synthetic gases representing bad smells and automotive exhaust gases.

As a promising catalyst reducing cold start emissions of automobiles, a photocatalyst system has been studied. The photocatalyst is activated by UV wavelengths light, it need no heat energy like as a conventional TWC. Therefore it needs no light off time. However, as a cold temperature catalysts, photocatalysts has some problems to apply on vehicle system.<br/> In this study, additive catalysts for photocatalysts was investigated in the points of increasement of the performance and the durability. Two kinds of additive were coated with two kinds of photocatalysts. The samples were aged with a hydrothermal aging method. The performance of these samples were tested on a model gas apparatus. The durability was also tested with XRD.<br/>

Since photocatalysts arc activated by lights of UV wavelengths, plasma is alternatively used as a light source for a photocatalytic reactor. Light intensity generated by plasma is proportional to the surface area of catalytic material, and this, in many practical applications, is prescribed by the geometry of a plasma generator. Thus, it is crucial to increase the surface area for sufficient light intensity for photocatalytic reaction. For example, in a pack-bed type reactor, multitudes of beads are used as a substrate in order to increase the surface area. Honeycomb monolith type substrate, which has very good surface area to volume ratio, has been difficult to apply plasma as a light source due to the fact that light penetration depth through the honeycomb monolith was too short to cover sufficient area, thus resulting in poor intensity for photocatalytic reaction. In this study, nonthermal plasma generation through a photocatalytic reactor of honeycomb monolith substrate is investigated to lengthen this short penetration depth. The ceramic honeycomb monolith substrate used in this study has the same length as a three way catalyst used for automotive applications, and it is shown that sufficient light intensity for photocatalytic reaction can also be obtained with honeycomb monolith type reactor.
