Objectives; Naval crew are under continuous exposure and inevitable situation from sea sickness because of occupational reasons. This research aimed at report the present state of sea sickness and psychologic status in navy crew and study effects of psychologic factors on sea sickness. Methods; This research was designed as questionnaire-based cross-sectional study. This study included 86 healthy sailors who were members of a naval destroyer. We collected age, gender, sailor experience, baseline characteristics of motion sickness and its score using Misery Scale. For evaluation of psychologic status, Beck's depression inventory and Beck's anxiety inventory were conducted. Kruskal-Wallis univariate analysis and linear logistic analysis was done for statistical establishment. Results; People who had ever suffered from sea sickness were 67 (77.9%) and 18 people could not adjust to sea sickness after a sailing experience until the study. The score of Beck's depression inventory had linear association with final Misery scale, but not first Misery scale. Beck's anxiety inventory score was not associated with adjustment of sea sickness. Sixteen responders had an experience to be ignored in sea sickness management due to its position, and 21 responders due to their current duty. Conclusions; We concluded that the adjustment of sea sickness was associated with depression but not anxiety. Therefore active psychologic counseling in a ship will help crew to adjust to sea sickness.

Objectives; The current prescription for sea sickness compromises dimenhydrinate antihistamine medication. However, the effect of caffeine on sea sickness is controversial. This study was conducted to study patient experience on the current anti-sea sickness medications and to compare patient experience of dimenhydrinate plus caffeine compound to dimenhydrinate single medication. Methods; This research was a retrospective survey study in a naval destroyer. The study population included all visitors to a ship clinic due to sea sickness and who were prescribed dimenhydrinate plus caffeine compound or single dimenhydrinate from May 2018 to June 2018. We collected age, gender, sailor experience, and the duration from administration to symptom relief. Misery scale before and after using medications were checked for scoring sea sickness. Two sides were compared with Kruskal-Wallis univariate analysis. The effectiveness of medications were also evaluated with 4 categorized symptoms as follows: Gastrointestinal, neurologic, autonomic, and generalized symptoms. Results; Among 61 included patients, 37 patients took dimenhydrinate plus caffeine and 24 patients took single dimenhydrinate. The duration from administration to symptom relief were not different (66.5 and 57.7 minutes, p=0.276) in two groups. Misery scale after usage had no difference (0.9 and 0.7). When comparing 4 symptoms, symptom relief was obtained for gastrointestinal (25% and 29.7%) and neurologic (20.8% and 19.8%) symptoms, respectively. However, caffeine compound showed higher symptom relief proportion (35.1%) than dimenhydrinate single (20.8%). Conclusions; There were no significant difference in overall sea sickness severity between dimenhydrinate plus caffeine and dimenhydrinate single. However, autonomic symptoms were more likely to be relieved by caffeine compound.
