Diesel engine is widely used for industry, vehicles engine because it is more powerful and fuel economy than gasoline engine. the problems of exhaust gas emissions are getting more serious in the world due to the rapid escalation of vehicles. in response to the problem, The exhaust gas regulations have been strengthened for the reduction of the exhaust gas emissions. in particular, NOx and soot reduction technology is required. Recentry, various techniques have been studied about NOx and soot in the diesel engine. In this study, we studied about effect of EGR on engine performance and emissiom characteristics. as a result 1) The maximum pressure of combustion chamber, engine power, torque was decresed with incresing the EGR rate. but BSFC was incresed. 2) NOx and soot was decresed with incresing the EGR rate.

Diesel engines have the superior combustion efficiency and fuel economy that they are widely used for industry, heavyduty vehicles, etc. However, its exhaust emissions have become the major concerns due to their environmental impacts. Moreover, the depletion of fossil fuels is the main issue. Therefore, it is important to look for alternative sources of energy. Bio-diesel is one of the ideal energy which has proved to be eco-friendly for more than fossil fuels. The experimental tests analysed the engine performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine using diesel and biodiesel blended of BD25, BD45 and BD65, in order to study the use of clean fuel to meet the increasingly stringent emission regulations. The engine performance was examined by using engine dynamometer while an exhaust gas analyzer was used to examine the emission characteristics. The effect of biodiesel on exhaust emission characteristics were strongly affected by the blending ratio of diesel and biodiesel. The results showed that the smoke opacity decreased while the nitrogen oxides(NOx) slightly increased. According to the results, at the medium speed, the effect of using biodiesels smoke and NOx reduction at the same time are better than others.

The effect of biodiesel on engine performance were lower to diesel through comparing their HP and torque but fuel consumption was slightly increased because of biodiesel has lower heating value and higher density than diesel. However, due to the better lubricity, the brake thermal efficiency of biodiesel was higher than diesel. The emission characteristics were strongly affected by the blending ratio of diesel and biodiesel. The results showed that the smoke opacity, hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) emissions decreased while the nitrogen oxides (NOX) slightly increased.

The results showed that the exhaust gas temperature decreased, but also the smoke opacity, carbon monoxide(CO) and hydrocarbons(HC) emissions decreased while the nitrogen oxides(NOX) slightly increased.

With the development of global automobile industry, the pollution caused by automobile exhaust gas has become more and more serious, especially NOx pollution. During these years, the government recognizes the problem and legislates to limit the exhaust emission. As the main power source of vehicle, the question how to purify NOx emission for diesel engine has become one of the hotspots. Now, technology of EGR is known as the effective method to purify NOx emission, which is available for diesel engine. diesel engine are introduced in this article. The mechanism of nitrogen oxides formation and how the EGR can reduce the NOx emission are studied, and we have done the test experiment of the diesel engine, The main contents includes: Adapting to the requirement of the emission legislation, an EGR system was applied to a diesel engine to reduce NOx emission. The effects of different EGR rate on the emissions and performances of the engine were investigated by the engine test, in which the EGR rates of different engine mode will be optimized based. The results showed that EGR can reduce NOx emission of this diesel engine significantly under various operation conditions, but it will have negative influence on smoke, the effective torque and the effective specific fuel consumption with the increasing of EGR rates. So there will be an optimum working state of EGR rates under various operation conditions. Through the optimum emission test for EGR, it proves that the optimized EGR strategy can reduce the NOx emission efficiently and limit the negative influence on other emission and the performance of engine.
