Pollutant exposure due to industrial development increases oxidative stress in human bodies. Dietary intake of antioxidant shows a protective effect against oxidative damage induced by oxidative stress. Therefore, the development of natural antioxidants is needed. In this study, the antioxidant activities of some Nepali medicinal plant extracts were measured. Using Rose bengal and 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine, a novel assay was utilized to evaluate the singlet oxygen scavenging capacity, and showed a strong correlation with other antioxidant assays. Also, antioxidant capacities based on four assays including the singlet oxygen scavenging assay were highly correlated (≥ 0.858) with the total phenolic contents in the medicinal plant extracts. Among the selected extracts, Persicaria capitata, Elaphoglossum marginatum and Eurya acuminata showed the highest antioxidant capacities. Overall, this study presents a novel approach for evaluating singlet oxygen scavenging capacity, and performed a screening of antioxidant capacities of 54 Nepali herbal medicines.
Current technologies for heavy metal removal from food and environmental resources

Exposure to heavy metals in water and food poses a significant threat to human well-being, necessitating the efficient removal of these contaminants. The process of urban development exacerbates heavy metal pollution, thereby increasing risks to both human health and ecosystems. Heavy metals have the capacity to enter the food chain, undergo bioaccumulation and magnify, ultimately resulting in adverse effects on human health. Therefore, implementing effective pollution control measures and adopting sustainable practices are crucial for mitigating exposure and associated health risks. Various innovative approaches, including adsorption, ion exchange, and electrochemical technology, are currently being actively investigated to cope with the issue of heavy metal contamination. These innovative methods offer benefits such as efficient recycling, cost-effectiveness and environmental friendliness. In this review, we summarize recent advances for removing heavy metals from water, soil and food, providing valuable guidance for environmental engineers and researchers seeking to address contamination challenges.

Metabolomic analysis of organic acids has not been performed for evaluation whether ginseng has been cultivated using conventional or environmental-friendly farming methods. In this study, profiling analysis was conducted for organic acids (OAs) in ginseng roots produced using conventional or environment-friendly farming methods at five locations in each of five regions. In OA profiles, lactic acid was the most abundant OA in all regions, with the exception for environmentally friendly farmed ginseng in two of the five regions, in which glycolic acid was most abundant OA. OA profiles in all regions showed isocitric acid levels were increased by environment-friendly cultivation, which suggests metabolic differences associated from farming method, and that isocitric acid might be a useful discriminatory biomarker of environmental-friendly and conventional cultivation. The results of the present study suggest metabolomic studies of OAs in ginseng roots might be useful for monitoring whether ginseng has been cultivated using conventional or environmentally friendly farming methods.
Nutraceutical potential of polyphenol-rich Sargassum species grown off the Korean coast: a review

Sargassum, a brown seaweed, has been used traditionally as food and medicine in Korea, China, and Japan. Sargassum spp. contain bioactive substances associated with health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Thirty Sargassum spp. inhabit the Korean coast. However, their health benefits have yet to be systematically summarized. Therefore, the purpose of this article was to review the health benefits of these 30 Sargassum spp. grown off the Korean coast based on their health benefits, underlying mechanisms, and identified bioactive compounds.
Development of ICT Statistics in Korea

Information society measurements are explosively gaining attention as the development of ICT and a rapid spread of Internet are altering social and economic activities of business, households and goverments. Compiling ICT statistics has been an urgent matter for many economies, and Korea is no exception in that respect. Firstly, this paper provides the measurement frameworks developed by OECD and Eurostat and then presents the initiatives which have been launched in Korea to measure the size, growth and nature of the information society. On the basis of the initiatives and the frameworks, this paper shows the trend analysis on the ICT industries as well as ICT usage and penetration in business and household sectors. This paper also deals with the classification issue on ICT sector, which is closely relevant with ICT statistics. As the United Nations is in the process of revising its International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC) Revision 3 and plans to prepare ISIC Revision 4 by 2007, Korea needs to keep an eye on this change and to reflect the change into the Korean Standard Industrial Classification.

본 논문은 시각장애인 안내견이 부족한 상황 개선과 시각장애인에게 안전하고 자유로운 이동을 제공해주는 “시각장애인의 안전한 이동을 도와주는 지능형 카트”를 제안한다. 주요 특징은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 지문 인식 센서를 활용해 지문 등록 후 본인 인증을 하고 압력 센서를 활용해 카트 손잡이를 잡았을 경우에만 카트가 출발하도록 한다. 둘째, 라이다, 카메라를 이용하여 자율 주행 한다. 셋째, 음성인식 통해 목적지 설정, 속도 조절, 경고 알림 기능을 제공한다. 넷째, 짐칸을 설치하여 음성인식으로 여닫을 수 있도록 한다. 다섯째, 앱을 통해 카트 운전 모드를 변경할 수 있다.

Loxoprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatorydrug of the 2-arylpropionic acid type, which has used totreat musculoskeletal disorders in the horse racing industry. However, it has also used illicitly to mask clinical signs ofinflammation and pain in racehorses. Thus, its accurateanalysis has become an important issue in horse dopinglaboratories. In this study, an analytical method of loxoprofenwas developed as tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS)derivative by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC–MS). Characteristic fragment ions of [M-15], [M-57],and [M-139] permitted the accurate and selective detectionof loxoprofen. Under optimal conditions, this methodshowed good linearity (r C 0.999) in the range of10–500 ng/mL, repeatability (% relative standard deviation= 5.6–8.5), and accuracy (% relative error =- 0.3–0.9) with a detection limit of 1.0 ng. When appliedto the analysis of loxoprofen in tablet and patch products,loxoprofen was positively identified as TBDMS derivativeby GC–MS. The present method provided rapid andaccurate determination of loxoprofen in patch and tabletproducts. Levels of loxoprofen were highest in equine urineat 0.5 and 1 h after oral administration with single dose(3 mg/kg) to three horses, and then rapidly reduced tobelow the lower limit of quantification at 24 h. Therefore,the present method will be useful for the pharmacokineticstudy and doping tests for loxoprofen and other similaracidic drugs in horses.
