Petrophysical parameters such as porosity and fluid saturation which provide useful information for reservoir characterization could be estimated by rock physics model (RPM) using seismic velocity and resistivity. Therefore, accurate P-wave velocity and resistivity information have to be obtained for successful estimation of the petrophysical parameters. Compared with the individual inversion of electromagnetic (EM) or seismic data, the joint inversion using both EM and seismic data together can reduce the uncertainty and gives the opportunity to use the advantages of each data. Thus, more reliable petrophysical properties could be estimated through the joint inversion. In this paper, for the successful estimation of petrophysical parameters, we proposed an effective method which applies a grid-search method to find the porosity and fluid saturation. The relations of porosity and fluid saturation with P-wave velocity and resistivity were expressed by using RPM and the improved resistivity distribution used to this study was obtained by joint inversion of seismic and EM data. When the proposed method was applied to the synthetic data which were simulated for subsea reservoir exploration, reliable petrophysical parameters were obtained. The results indicate that the proposed method can be applied for detecting a reservoir and calculating the accurate oil and gas reserves.

Recently, hydraulic fracturing is used in various fields and microseismic monitoring is one of the best methods for judging where hydraulic fractures exist and how they are developing. When locating microseismic events using single vertical well data, distances from the vertical array and depths from the surface are generally decided using time differences between compressional (P) wave and shear (S) wave arrivals and azimuths are calculated using P wave hodogram analysis. However, in field data, it is sometimes hard to acquire P wave data which has smaller amplitude than S wave because microseismic data often have very low signal to noise (S/N) ratio. To overcome this problem, in this study, we developed a grid search algorithm which can find event location using all combinations of arrival times recorded at receivers. In addition, we introduced and analyzed the method which calculates azimuths using S wave. The tests of synthetic data show the inversion method using all combinations of arrival times and receivers can locate events without considering the origin time even using only single phase. In addition, the method can locate events with higher accuracy and has lower sensitivity on first arrival picking errors than conventional method. The method which calculates azimuths using S wave can provide reliable results when the dip between event and receiver is relatively small. However, this method shows the limitation when dip is greater than about 20° in our model test.

To yield physically meaningful images through elastic reverse-time migration, the wavefield separation which extracts P- and S-waves from reconstructed vector wavefields by using elastic wave equation is prerequisite. For expanding the application of the elastic reverse-time migration to anisotropic media, not only the anisotropic modelling algorithm but also the anisotropic wavefield separation is essential. The anisotropic wavefield separation which uses pseudo-derivative filters determined according to vertical velocities and anisotropic parameters of elastic media differs from the Helmholtz decomposition which is conventionally used for the isotropic wavefield separation. Since applying these pseudo-derivative filter consumes high computational costs, we have developed the efficient anisotropic wavefield separation algorithm which has capability of parallel computing by using GPUs (Graphic Processing Units). In addition, the highly efficient anisotropic elastic reverse-time migration algorithm using MPI (Message-Passing Interface) and incorporating the developed anisotropic wavefield separation algorithm with GPUs has been developed. To verify the efficiency and the validity of the developed anisotropic elastic reverse-time migration algorithm, a VTI elastic model based on Marmousi-II was built. A synthetic multicomponent seismic data set was created using this VTI elastic model. The computational speed of migration was dramatically enhanced by using GPUs and MPI and the accuracy of image was also improved because of the adoption of the anisotropic wavefield separation.
