파울즈(John Fowles)는 독자가 자신의 현실의식이 허구일 수 있다는 인식에 이르게 하는 시도를 한다. 독자가 이런 인식을 성취할 수 있게 하기 위해 파울즈가 채택한 전략은 그의 텍스트 안에서 찾아 볼 수 있다. 『콜렉터』에서 연속되는 두 화자의 텍스트는 모더니즘의 다중시점이 아니라 앞의 텍스트에서 구성한 환상이 뒤이은 텍스트에서 깨어지게 만드는 틀짜기와 틀깨기의 구조를 이룬다. 연속적인 이런 구조를 통해 독자들도 자신의 주체성과 현실에 대한 의식도 허구적 일 수 있음을 인식하게 된다. 이런 반복되는 틀짜기와 틀깨기의 서술은 『프랑스 중위의 여자』에서 새로운 방식으로 발전한다. 현대적 인물설정, 두 시대의 혼합, 화자 혹은 등장인물로서의 작가의 개입, 복수결말은 독자가 틀을 깨는 비평적 시각을 갖도록 돕는다. 이 두 텍스트에서 파울즈는 독서가 독자 스스로 발견하게 하는 과정이 되는 구조적인 전략을 만들었다. 작가의 목표는 독자가 자기 자신과 세상에 대한 자신의 인식이 허구적일 수 있음을 발견하게 하는 것이다. Fowles tries to lead his reader to an awareness that their view of reality may be a fiction by their false perception of reality. The Strategy that Fowles employs to make the reader achieve this awareness is found in the structure of his text. The Collector contains the alternating texts of two narrators, this structure should not be approached in light of modernism’s multiple points of view. Since the illusion evoked in one text is broken by the following text, the pattern of textual structure is that of frame-making and frame-breaking. This repeated “frame-making” and “frame-breaking” description develops to the new method in The French lieutenant’s women. Contemporary characters, the mixture of different two eras, the writer’s intervention as a speaker or a character and multiple ending help the readers get the critic’s view, which is “frame-breaking.” In these two text, Fowles creates a strategical structure in which the act of reading the text becomes heuristic process. The author’s goal is to make his reader discover the false frame that fictionalize his conception of himself and the world.

존 파울즈의 세 번째 소설인『프랑스 중위의 여자』는 메타픽션의 실험적인 글쓰기를 사용한 작품이다. 이 논문은 『프랑스 중위의 여자』에 나타난 복수결말에 대해다룬다. 이 소설에는 세 가지 종류의 결말이 등장하고 각 결말은 우리에게 많은 의미를 제시한다. 첫 번째 결말은 빅토리아 시대의 결말로 파울즈는 이 결말을 찰스의 상상이라고 말하며 의미를 축소시킴으로서 다른 결말의 문을 열어준다. 두 번째 결말은 현대적인 결말로 각 주인공들이 자신의 길을 찾기 위해 노력하며 특히 찰스는 빅토리아 시대의 방식을 따르지 않는다. 세 번째 결말이 파울즈가 제시하고자 했던 결말로 찰스는 사라의 진정한 정체성을 깨닫게 되고 새 삶과 자기 자신을 찾기 위한 여행을 떠난다. 찰스는 진정한 삶의선택과 실존을 깨닫는다. 복수 결말은 전통적인 소설 방식에서의 자유로워진 장치이다. 파울즈는 복수결말의 사용으로 전통적으로 수동적인 관중이었던 독자를 소설을 창작하는데에 참여시키고, 독자의 자유의지로 원하는 결말을 선택할 수 있게 한다. John Fowles``s third novel, The French Lieutenant``s Woman, is a work using the experimental writing technique of metafiction, and a response to the problem of modern fiction. This thesis deals with the multiple endings in The French Lieutenant``s Woman. There are three kinds of endings. Each ending gives us a lot of meanings.The first ending is Victorian way of ending. Fowles opens the door to other endings by reducing the meaning of this ending. Also he said this is the kind of imagine in Charles’s mind. The second ending is modern ending. Each character tries to find their own way. Especially, Charles doesn’t follow victorian way. The third ending is the right ending which Fowles wants to suggest. In this ending, Charles begins to recognize Sarah’s real identity and finds a new way of life. He goes to travel for finding himself. Charles realizes the existence and choice of the human beings in real life. Multiple ending is the device which ensures freedom from the traditional novel form. Fowles`` use of the ending makes the reader, traditionally a passive spectator, participate in ``creating`` the novel, interact with the story, and choose the ending which is desired by the free will of the reader.

본 논문은 존 파울즈의 세 번째 작품인 『프랑스 중위의 여자』에서 주요 등장인물이 자신의 자유를 얻는 과정을 다룬다. 이 작품에서 파울즈는 등장인물을 통해 인간의 자유의 중요성을 강조한다. 찰스, 사라, 샘은 동시대를 살아가나 각자 다른 사회적 위치와 환경에 놓여 있으며 각자 다른 형태의 자유를 위해 투쟁한다. 그들이 얻으려 노력한 자유는 실존적, 사회적, 계급적인 것으로 구분할 수 있으나 궁극적으로는 같은 의미를 지닌다. 사람은 어떤 것에도 제약받지 않고 자유의지를 가지고 행동할 수 있음을 나타내 준다. 찰스는 그의 자아정체성을 찾고 사라는 사회 구성원과 화합하며 샘은 주변인들과 진정한 인간관계를 형성한다. 『프랑스 중위의 여자』를 통해 파울즈는 등장인물과 독자에게 우리의 삶과 특정 시간이나 공간의 한계를 넘어선 인간 자유의 의미에 대해 생각할 기회를 제공해 준다. This thesis deals with the process of the main character’s gaining their own freedom in John Fowles``s third novel, The French Lieutenant``s Woman. Through the characters in the novel, Fowles emphasizes the importance of freedom in human beings. Although Charles, Sarah, and Sam lives in the same period, they struggle for their own mode of freedom; They are in different social position and circumstances. The freedom which they try to gain can be classified as existential, social, and hierarchical one respectively. These freedoms however, ultimately mean the same thing; it indicates the state in which a man can act with his free will without being restricted by others and without being bounded by anything. Charles finds his self-identity, Sarah becomes harmonious with the social members, and Sam forms a real human relationship with the people around him. It seems that each of them challenges his or her life with free will and accepts the limits of human freedom. Through The French Lieutenant``s Woman, Fowles seems to offer his characters and his readers an opportunity to think about the essence and meaning of our lives and the meanings of human freedom beyond the boundary of specific time space.

John Fowles’s third novel, The French Lieutenant’s Woman, is a work using the experimental writing technique of metafiction, and a response to the problem of modern fiction. This thesis deals with the freedom from the form of the The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969). The author explores not only the theme of the freedom of his characters, but also of the freedom of the novel form. He inserts his own intrusive commentary featuring self-reflection and the suggestion of multiple endings. Fowles as an intrusive narrator tells many things with his own voice about the hypocritical Victorian society and its convention including the cautious science and incautious religion, the corrupt politics and the immutable castes of Victorian age. Multiple ending is the device which ensures freedom from the traditional novel form. Fowles' use of the ending makes the reader, traditionally a passive spectator, participate in 'creating' the novel, interact with the story, and choose the ending which is desired by the free will of the reader.
