The effects of tumble and swirl flows on the combustion were investigated exprementally in a 4-valve SI engine. The tunble flow pattems were generated by various intake ports of different entry angle; 25˚, 20˚ and 15˚. Inclined tumble(swirl) flows were induced by three different swirl control valves. The initial flame propagation was visualized by an ICCD camera and its image were analyzed to compare the enflamed area and displacement of initial flames. The combustion duration was calculated by heat release analysis of the pressure in an operating engine.
It was found that there is a correlation between the stronger tumble during induction and turbulence levels at the time of ignition resulting in faster flame davelopment. Inclined tumble was proved to be more beneficial than the pure tumlbe for faster and stable combustion under lean mixture conditions, which was confirmed by faster propagating flame images and comtustion durations.
A single-cylinder optical research engine for combustion visualization has been developed by modifying a 4-cylinder DOHC. spark-ignition engine. The design tips for the optical engine development are described and the visualized flame images are given. The optical engine has a piston-top window in the extended piston which allows optical access into the combustion chamber for flow and combustion research. The flame propagation at 800rpm was imaged by an ICCD camera for stoicheometric mixture under idling condition. Flame images imply that the initial flames are convected by the organized tumbling flow in the pent-roof combustion chamber.
The flow characteristics of five different 4-valve cylinder heads were investigated in a steady flow rig using laser-Doppler velocimetry. The tumble flow of each head with pentroof combustion chamber was quantified by nondimensional tumble number using a tumble adaptor. The formation of tumbling vortex was examined in an optical single-cylinder engine which has windows for in-cylinder LDV measurements. Tumble vortex ratio was estimated from the tumble flow measure
The four-valve cylinder heads with pent-roof combustion chamber showed the tumble vortex from the intake process, which was investigated in the steady flow test. The tumble adaptor which converts the tumble into swirl flow was found to be feasible in predicting the tumble flow in the real engine. The tumble strength in the steady flow test coincides with that in the real engine experiment within 15%. It was found that the steady flow test on the four-valve cylinder heads provides the tip for a better design of cylinder head.
Measurement tecliniques were developed to quantify the instantaneous piston assembly friction force and the oil film thickness between the piston rings and the cylinder liner. That can be easily applied to small multi-cylinder production engine. The friction force and oil film thickness data were acquired under various operation conditions and for various oils in an SI four cylinder engine. In this study, friction force data were found to be more reliable in consequence of proper compensation. It was possible to measure oil film thickness on thin oil ring rails as well as compression rings. The results revealed that mixed lubrication is dominant in limited operating conditions where product of kinematic viscosity and mean piston speed is lower than 80xl0^-6m³/s2.
A computational fluid dynamic tool was used to predict the performance of a prototype high-pressure swirl injector nozzle with respect to design parameters. Performance of the' prototype nozzle was investigated in terms of the flow rate and the initial spray angle. Design parameters included needle lift. needle-seat angles. orifice diameter and length. and needle-seat contact diameter. The most important parameter was found to be the orifice diameter. Transient flow rate was also examined. The needle-opening time was found to have influence on the linearity of the dynamic flow rate

Lean burn combustion is an important concept for improving the fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. However, the lean burning is associated with increased cy치e-to-cycle combustion variations due to the ignition instabilities and reduced flame propagation rates. Engine stability under lean mixture conditions could be improved by increasing flame speed through enhanced flow characteristics and by securing ignitability with improvment of ig-nition systems.
The effects of flow motion and ignition characteristics on the combustion performances were investigated in a 4-valve SI engine. Flow motions of tumble -swirl were varied with a swirl control valve attached at the inlet ports, while ignition energy and its distribution were controlled in a high-frequency ignition system by changing spark duration and spark frequency. The improvement of lean bum performance by the optimum flow motion and ignition characteristics is discussed.
