마태오 리치 『교우론(交友論)』과 한·중에서의 반향(反響)

『교우론』은 이탈리아 출신 예수회 선교사 마태오 리치(P. Matteo Ricci, 利瑪竇, 이탈리아, 1552-1610)가 적응주의 입장에서 최초로 저술한 한문 저작이다. 본고는 16세기 중국에 체류한 서양인이 생각한 `벗`의 의미와 이에 대한 중국과 조선의 반향을 살피는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 본고는 먼저 『교우론』의 서지사항을 살피고 내용에 따른 주제를 분류하여 살폈다. 이 책의 본문은 총 100개의 항목으로 되어 있는데, 이를 주요 내용상 관련 주제에 따라 정리하여 나누어 보면 1)벗의 정의, 2)벗 사귐의 목적, 3)벗의 진위(眞僞) 판정,4) 벗 사귐의 원칙, 5)벗 사귐의 태도 등으로 살펴 볼 수 있다. 동서양의 우정론을 바탕으로 저술된 『교우론』은 중국과 일본을 비롯하여 조선에 전해졌고, 이후 이들 지역에서 진행되었던 우정의 담론에 영향을 주었다. 특히 스토아철학과 유가 전통 간의 유사성을 바탕으로 우정이라는 동서고금의 공통적 주제를 통해 두 사상을 하나로 융합시켰다는 점에서 특별한 의의를 가진다. 마태오 리치의 『교우론』은 중국의 문화를 존중하는 이른바 `적응주의` 선교 전략과 예수회 포교로써 유교를 보완한다는 `보유론(補儒論)`에 따라 가능하면 종교적인 색채를 감추고 유학자들에게 받아들여지고자 하는 방식을 취했다. 이 점에 매료되어 『교우론』은 동·서양 우정론의 소통을 시도한 저작으로 받아들여지면서 당대 널리 유포되었던 것이다. `벗`을 접점으로 한 동서양 우정론의 만남이라는 관점에서 의의가 있으며 우정론을 중시하는 유교적 전통의 지식인들에게 큰 호응과 반향을 일으켰다. 17세기 초·중반 이수광·유몽인 등이 마태오 리치의 다른 저작과 소개하는 수준이었던 것이 18세기 들면서 이서·이익·박지원 등이 『교우론』을 적극적으로 읽고 내용적 측면을 수용하기에 이르렀다. 이러한 경향은 19세기 초·중반까지 지속되며 특히 이규경은 그 내용을 더 과감하게 차용하여 구성하는 양상으로 나타났다. 이상에서 살핀 바와 같이 『교우론』은 16세기 중국에 체류하였던 선교사 마태오 리치의 입장에서 저술한 것으로 문화적 배경은 서구였으나 오랜 중국 생활로 사용된 언어와 내용은 당시의 동아시아 문화를 적극적으로 수용한 흔적이 확인된다는 점에서 동서 문화 교류의 매개 역할을 한 것으로 평가할 수 있다. 『Gyowooron(交友論)』 is the first chinese letter book in the aspect of the accommodationism written by P. Matteo Ricci, a Christian Missionary, from Italy(1552~1610). This paper is to review the meaning of the friendship in the point of Westerner in those days. This paper reviews the contents of the book and categorizes by some subjects. Contents of this book comprise 100 items and they can be categorized as follows. 1)the definition of the friend, 2)the purpose of the making friends, 3)the decision rule of true friend or not, 4)the principle of the making friends, 5)the attitude of the making friends. 『Gyowooron』, of which contents are for the friendship based on the humanism, was handed down to the China and Yi Dynasty and affected to the issues of the friendship of this areas. Especially, this book fused the Stoicism and the Confucianism through the carrying the similarity of the friendship in the two ideologies. And this book deeply affected to the intellectuals who valued the friendship in those Confucianism days. In Korea, this book introduced first by Lee SooKwang,Yoo MongIn in first and mid of 17C and this book was accepted more actively by Lee Suh, Lee Ik, Park JiWon in 18C and continued to the 19C by the scholars such as Lee KyuKyung. As reviewed by above, even though 『Gyowooron』 is written in the aspect of the Christian Missionary whose background was Western Culture, this book adopted the Eastern Asia Culture in those days. In this point, this book can be appreciated in playing a role as a bridge in the communications between the Eastern and the Western Cultures, and to study this book has its special meaning in the aspect of the history of the communications between the Eastern and the Western Cultures.
