Stainless steel has been stably used closed by passivity oxidation films(Cr₂O₃) is made by neutral atmospheric environment. However, passivity oxidation films of the surface of stainless steel occasionally comes to be destroyed in seawater which is influenced by an environment having halogen ion like Cl?, then, localization corrosion comes to occur. Stainless steel 304 for shaft system material of the small-size FRP fishing boat on seawater environments made an experiment on simulation of sacrifical anode(Al, Zn). Through these experiment and study, following results have been obtained ; According to the field inspection and corrosion simulation, the corrosion on the 2nd class stainless steel shaft(STS 304) in FRP fishing boat has been verified to occur by crevice corrosion and galvanic corrosion etc.. According to the comparison and analysis of Stainless steel 304 shaft materials after simulation leaving unprotected and applying cathodic protection, unprotected shaft specimen of stainless steel 304 was severely corroded, but, protected shaft specimen was not totally corroded. This result is assumed to be made by the facts that anodic reaction, Fe→ Fe²? + 2e?, has been restricted by the cathodic protection current of sacrificial anode material.

Magnesium thin films were prepared on cold-rolled steel substrates by RF(Radio Frequency) magnetron sputtering technique.1) The crystal orientation and monitoring of the deposited films were investigated by using XRD(X-ray Diffraction) and EIS(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy), respectively. The corrosion rates of Mg thin films deposited with different argon gas pressure and substrate bias voltage were monitored by AC impedance method under a cyclic wet-dry condition, which was conducted by exposure to alternate conditions of 1h immersion in 3%NaCl solution and 5h drying at 60% RH and 25℃. The result of corrosion rate of Mg thin films deposited at various Ar gas pressures and substrate bias voltage under wet-dry cyclic exposure in chloride-containing solutions was showed the following conclusions. At the region during the onset of the wet cycle, corrosion rate showed relatively low value. The increase in the Corrosion rate of region Ⅱ is due to the increase in the chloride concentration. Corrosion rate of region Ⅲ during the onset of the cycle zero and salt crystals remain on the metal surface.

In general, the residual stress which remains after welding or heat treatment in material can cause the stress concentration or localization corrosion. In case of small ship, stainless steel such as STS304 has long been used for propeller shaft. Meanwhile, crew of small ship tend to reuse damaged propeller shaft after repair by welding and performing heat treatment to save cost. However, it was found that reused propeller shaft by repair often caused troubles in ship's operation. In this study, the basic guideline for maintenance and treatment of propeller shaft are investigated. From the results of investigation, remarkable deterioration of the material properties and corrosion resistance on the welded work part was observed.

Magnesium is the lightest of all the structural metals having density of 1.74. It is approximately 2/3 lighter than aluminium, 1/4 lighter than titanium alloy and 1/5 lighter than iron. Among the light-weight alloys, magnesium and its alloys show a good possibility for high performance aerospace and automotive applications, however the widespread use of magnesium alloys has been limited mainly by its poor oxidation and corrosion resistance. In this work, corrosion-resistive thin films were prepared onto the magnesium alloy substrate(AZ91D) by environmental friendly coating technique, ion plating method. And their corrosion protection mechanism were analyzed.

Mg thin films were prepared by PVD method on electroplated Zn steel substrate. And the influence of gas pressure on their morphology and d-value shift of the deposited films were investigated by scannig electron microscopy(SEM) and X -ray diffraction(XRD). In addition, the effect of corrosion resistance of these films as a function of morphology and d-value shift was evaluated by anodic polarization test. From the experiment results, it is investigated that the film of granular structure which deposited at high gas pressure condition had the best corrosion resistance.

(100-x)ZnㆍMg alloy films are prepared onto cold-rolled steel substrates; where x ranged from 0 to about 38 atomic %. The alloy films show microcrystalline and grain structures respectively, according to preparation conditions such as composition ratio of zinc and magnesium or gas pressures etc.. And X-ray diffraction analysis indicates not only the presence of Zn-Mg thin films with forced solid solution but also the one of MgZn₂ alloy films partly. In addition the influence of Mg/Zn composition ratio and morphology of the Zn-Mg alloy films on corrosion behavior is evaluated by electro-chemical anodic polarization tests in deaerated 3% NaCl solution. From this experimental results, all the prepared Zn-Mg alloy films showed obviously good corrosion resistance to compare with 99.99% Zn and 99.99% Mg Ingots for evaporation metal. It is thought that the Zn-Mg films with effective forced solid solution prepared by plasma enhanced PVD method, produces smaller and denser grain structure so that may improve the formation of homogeneous passive layer in corrosion environment.
