For application in DMFC(Direct Methanol Fuel Cell), this study presents a design concept, fabrication and pumping characteristics of a novel piezoelectric pump using resonance and fluid inertia. The pump consists of a resonantly-driven pumping unit, an inlet check valve, and an outlet pipeline element with a small diameter. The resonance mechanism simply magnifies a displacement of the piezoelectric actuator like a mass-spring vibration system. The fluid inertia effect using narrow pipeline element instead of the outlet check valve results in a fast flow of the pipeline element. A prototype pump is fabricated with the size less than 2.0×2.0×2.2㎤, and then pumping characteristics such as displacement and flow rate on driving frequency are experimentally investigated and discussed.
