One option for disposal of marine waste plastics is pelletization and combustion for energy recovery. In a fixed bed which is commonly applied for waste combustion, however, it is difficult for plastic pellets to achieve stable and continous propagation of ignition front from the surface to the bottom of the bed because of melting and subsequent blockage of air passages. In this study, the cofiring of wood pellets was investigated for successful fixed bed combustion of plastic pellets at different cofiring ratios and air flow rates. It was found that the steady propagation of the ignition front can be achieved by cofiring at least 20 wt% of wood pellets. The burning rate was approximately 105 kg/m2h, which is useful to determine the minimum area required for a moving grate.
