In the funeral culture, filial piety is the essence, and manners are the base. Death is a practice of filial piety. Confucius said filial piety is the foundation of virtue and Mencius said serving one’s parents is the most important service above all, and it is said that and in the Analects of Confucius, “serve the dead as if they were alive” And in Confucianism, it is also believed that the very beginning of the five virtues : humanity(仁), righteousness(義), manners(禮), intelligence(智) fidelity(信) is the filial piety. Confucius emphasized the filial piety constantly, in order to further strengthen the family system which is the base of virtue governance. And he also said that one should serve his or her parents like the way he or she serves the sky. They use the words, parents and the sky, as the same concept, and by defining the relationship between humans as humanity(人 倫), and the relationship between parents and children as moral laws(天倫), they shows us filial piety in the Confucian point of view. In association with a unique Confucian understanding of death, this Confucian ideaof filial piety presents itself as a memorial service for one’s ancestors even after their parents pass away. In the Confucian ideas about the life after death, when people die, there remain soul(魂) and dead body(魄), dead body(魄) goes into the earth and soul goes up to the sky. They believed they could extend the dead’s remainning lives for the time being, through appropriate memorial service that combines soul and dead body(魄). And therefore, they believed their ancestors are going to really die if they stop the memorial service. Words of Mencius : The biggest impiety is to stop their memorial service due to not having the son who can continue their lineage, show us the importance of filial piety after death. In the Confucian memorial service, filial piety is the essence of the idea and it means one should serve their parents with filial piety when they are alive and even after they are deceased. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of filial piety which are represented in funeral rites and the cultural characteristics of filial piety which are revealed in funeral culture, based on the traditional Confucian funeral process. First I will look into the Confucian funeral process in Korea, and identify the characteristics of filial piety realized and revealed in the process. And then I will examine what is changed in the process and identify if there is any simplification, and what it brings to characteristics of filial piety. Through the simplification of funeral ceremony, the available area has decreased in which one can practice his filial piety, compared to traditional society. Nowadays, we can summarize the filial piety culture in the funeral ceremony, as the one simplified both in time and space, practicing filial piety by making a call of condolence and emphasizing materialistic piety. In order to practice the culture of filial piety perfectly in the social changes such as materialism and simplified funeral ceremony, I suggest that the role of professionals(funeral directors) who conduct the funeral ceremony and those who lead the funeral culture(leadership) becomes more important.
