The wide open throttle performance and piston temperatures were measured by the change of fuel:gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas(LPG). Bench test method was developed and experimented to study the effect of temperature on the formation of carbon deposit. The bench test results were confirmed by measuring the piston temperature and observing the deposit production rate at an actual engine running condition. Results show that if the fuel of spark ignition engine is changed from gasoline to LPG, the output power decreases about 10% and the piston temperatures increase about 40~55℃. In actual engine tests, because of this temperature increase, it was observed that the quantity of carbon deposit in the top ring groove increased in a big degree. Consequently, it is known that the ring sticking may occur if the gasoline engine was rebuilt to LPG fuelled engine. Therefore, in order to preserve the durability of LPG fuelled engine, it is necessary to lower the piston temperature by hardware modification or to reduce the carbon deposit by the improvement of engine oil.<br/>

The effect of spray jet and gallery cooling were studied in 3 types of engines, gasoline engine, direct injection diesel engine and indirect injection diesel engine, by measuring piston temperatures with and without cooling devices, spray jet and cooling gallery. As a result of the measurement, it is shown that the cooling effect of spray jet of gasoline engine is larger than that of diesel engine and the effect of cooling gallery of indirect injection diesel engine is larger than that of direct injection diesel engine. The different characteristics of piston design according to the engine types makes the cooling effect different from each other. Therefore, the characteristics of piston design should be considered when determining the most appropriate piston cooling method.<br/>

In order to understand the relationship between the phase angle of piston ring and oil consumption, the ring rotation and instantaneous oil consumption were measured at the same time. The ring rotation was measured by radio-tracer technique. The instantaneous oil consumption was measured by analyzing CO₂ concentration in exhaust gas. The use of hydrogen fuel not gasoline makes this possible because all of the carbon component in exhaust gas can be assumed to be produced from oil. As a result of experiment, it is known that the oil consumption varies periodically and a specific location of ring end gap was found at each peak of oil consumption. Therefore, it was found that the oil consumption was not constant even at the same operating conditions and this is because the relative locations of top and 2'nd ring end gap change arbitrarily.<br/>

In order to investigate the relationship between the ring gap ratio and oil consumption, the axial motion of piston ring was measured by capacitance technique. The pressures of each land and the motions of each rings were calculated by orifice-volume method in which it is assumed that the ring gaps are the only gas leakage paths. The calculated results were compared with the measured ones. Consequently, it is known that the increase of ring gap ratio has the effect of lifting the l' st ring. The calculated results were roughly in accord with those of measured. Therefore, it is possible to predict the effect of design variables on the pattern of ring motion. It is known that the lift off of l' st ring accompanied by the increase of ring gap ratio make rise of oil comsumption.

The effects of the 2nd land volume and the hole from 2nd land to undercrown were investinated. Oil film thickness, ring motion and 2nd land pressure were analyzed to accomplish that. The oil film thickness between ring and liner was measured by capacitant technique to verify the calculated results. The increase of 2nd land volume reduces oil consumption. It is because of the change of oil film thichness rather than ring motion and blow-up gas rate. The difference of oil film thickness between intake-stroke and compression-stroke is proportional to oil consumption. The left behind oil during expansion-stroke is also proportional to it. The 2nd land hole was expected to reduce oil consumption because it decreases the 2nd land pressure and stabilized the axial motion of top ring. however, a counter result was obtained at the actual test, so it was found out that the effect of blow-down is significant as well as that of oil film thickness.<br/>

The rotational movements of piston rings were measured by a radiotracer technique in a single cylinder engine. In order to measure the rotation of the top and 2'nd ring simultaneously, two kinds of isotopes, ^60Co and ^192Ir, were used and mounted in each rings. 3 NaI γ -ray detectors were used to measure y -ray intensities. While motoring the assembled engine, the y -ray intensities were measured with the ring gap fixed at a certain angle, and as a result of repeating this procedure, the relationship between the gap angle and y -ray intensities was calculated. Based on this calibration results, algorithm was made to determine the gap angle from the measured y -ray intensities and the uncertainties was below 8° . As results of the experiment, it was known that the movement of each ring isn't dependent on the other ring and also isn't regular at same operating condition. The rotational speed was within the range of 0.2~0.4 rev/min. Even though the movement patterns were arbitrary at the same condition, the tendency was found that the ring can rotate easily at low load condition.<br/>

본 연구는 알루미늄 블럭을 장착한 실 엔진 내구 시험시, 주철 블럭에서는 발생하지 않았던 열해에 의한 피스톤 톱랜드 손상 원일을 밝히고, 대책을 세우는데 그 목적이 있다. 대상에서 주철 블럭과 알루미늄 블럭을 장착한 엔진의 피스톤 온도와 블럭 각 부위의 열유속 및 열정산을 측정, 비교하여 아래와 같은 사실들을 밝혀 내었다. 알루미늄 블럭 엔진에서의 피스톤 손상은 알루미늄 블럭의 주조 블량에 의하여 피스톤이 고온이 되었기 때문에 발생하였다. 알루미늄 블럭에서 실린더 라이너의 주조 상태 개선없이 피스톤 손상을 방지하기 위하여 피스톤 오일젯과 오일 쿨러 장착 그리고 오일 펌프의 용량 증대가 필수적이다.
