CNC (Carbon Nano Colloid) was used as an additive to the positive electrode to improve the discharge performance of sealed lead-acid batteries, The cathode active material ($PbO_2$) has a relatively low utility of less than 60 % compared with other kind of batteries, such as Ni-MH and Lithium ion, In this study, to overcome the above-mentioned problem we investigated the effects of CNC addition on the enhancement of electrical connection with not-utilized $PbO_2$ and resultantly electrical conductivity of electrode, We examined low rate discharge capacities, high rate discharge capacities and internal resistances of the batteries containing various amounts of CNC. From these results, we found out that the addition of CNC into the positive electrode made a significant improvement in high rate discharge capacity, We also suggested the optimum content of CNC material in positive electrode.

Distraction osteogenesis(DO) is a surgical method of bone formation that involves an osteotomy and sequential stretching of the healing callus by gradual movement and subsequent remodeling. DO is used to correct facial asymmetry, such as in patients with hemifacial microsomia, maxillary or mandibular retrusion, cleft lip and palate, alveolar defects, and craniofacial deficiency. It is accomplished with the aid of a distraction device, which is secured with screws placed directly into bone, for a predetermined length of time. Hemifacial microsomia is characterized by unilateral facial hypoplasia, often with unilateral shortening of the mandible and subsequent malocclusion. Patients with hemifacial microsomia and facial asymmetry have a vertically short maxilla, tilted occlusal plane, and short mandible. Early treatment is necessary to avoid subsequent impaired midfacial growth. The standard treatment of these malformations consists of the application of bone grafts, which can lead to unpredictable growth. The new bone-lengthening procedure represents a limited surgical intervention and opens up a new perspective for treatment, especially in younger children with severe deformities. This report describes a case of hemifacial microsomia(Type-II left-sided hemifacial microsomia). The patient, a 10-year-old child, visited our clinic for facial asymmetry correction. He had a hypoplastic mandible, displaced ear lobe, 10 mm canting on the right side, and malocclusion. We planned DO to lengthen the left mandible in conjunction with a Le Fort I osteotomy for decanting and then perform a right intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy(IVRO). Progressive distraction at a rate of 0.5 mm/12 hours was initiated 7 days postoperatively. The duration of DO was 17 days. The consolidation period was 3 months. Satisfactory results were obtained in our case, indicating that DO can be used successfully for functional, aesthetic reconstruction of the mandible. We report a case involving DO in conjunction with orthognathic surgery for correcting mandibular hypoplasia with a review of the literature.

This study evaluated the influence of smooth and brushite-coated implant surfaces in dogs. The first through fourth mandibular premolars were extracted from eight young adult dogs. Twelve weeks after extraction. implantation was performed at the extraction sites. In total, 40 implant fixtures were implanted in the dog mandibles. Twenty machined implants served as controls and twenty brushite-coated surfaces served as tests. Dogs were sacrificed 2 and 4 weeks after implantation. The hemi-mandibles were obtained and processed histologically to obtain non-decalcified sections. Longitudinal sections of each implant were made and analyzed using light microscopy. The overall implant success rate was 83.3%. Histomorphometrically. the experimental group had a better percentage of bone-implant contact than the control group (p<0.05) and there was a significant difference between the 2- and 4-week groups after implantation (p<0.05) Our results suggest that the implant surface morphology influences the increase in peri-implant osteogenesis in the early period of peri-implant healing.

This study evaluated whether there is a difference between a conventional titanium distraction device and a TiN-coated device in terms of implant osseointegration after horizontal distraction osteogenesis in narrow alveolar bone. Four adult mongrel dogs, each weighing $9{\sim}10kg$, were used in this study. The lower premolars were extracted and horizontal distraction was performed with conventional titanium distraction devices (group 1) or TiN-coated devices (group 2). After an 8-week consolidation period, the implants were installed, and the dogs were sacrificed after another 8 weeks. The osseointegration around the implants was evaluated histomorphologically. There was one failure in experimental group 1 because of fracture of the device. Direct bone contact was achieved and there were no significant differences between the control group and experimental groups 1 and 2 in terms of osseointegration around the implants at 8 weeks. In summary, intraoral distraction osteogenesis is a good option for augmenting severely atrophied alveolar ridges, and the TiN-coated device may be useful because of its advantages, which include surface hardness, corrosion resistance, and reduced bacteria.

This study is objected to evaluate capacity of sludge handling facilities at Awater treatment plant. A new method was presented to calculate sludge quantity. Comparison of calculated and measured sludge quantities revealed that the new method can be useful for the estimation of sludge quantity. This study found that quantity of sedimentation sludge considerably exceeded the design capacity of the sludge holding basin. The sludge holding basin was properly designed, but low sludge concentration caused the problem of overloading. Discharge of dilute sludge and leakage was the reason. To rectify the problem, a turbidity meter was installed to prevent discharge of dilute sludge from sedimentation basin. A new control valve was also installed to prevent leakage from sedimentation basin. This study found that improvement of treatment operation could solve the problem of sludge overloading.

In this study, we investigated the kinetics of gas hydrate formation in the presence of ionic liquid (IL). Hydroxyethyl-methyl-morpholinium chloride (HEMM-Cl) was chosen as a material for the promotion effect test. Phase equilibrium curve for CH4 hydrate with aqueous IL solution was obtained and its induction time and consumed amount of CH4 gas were also measured. Aqueous solutions containing 20∼20,000 ppm of HEMM-Cl was prepared and studied at 70 bar and 274.15 K. To compare the measured results to those of the conventional promoter, sodium dodecyl sulfate was also tested at the same condition. Result showed that the hydrate equilibrium curve was shifted toward higher pressure and lower temperature region. In addition, the induction time on CH4 hydrate formation in the presence of IL was not shown. The amount of consumed CH4 was increased with the whole range of tested concentration of IL and the highest consumption of CH4 happened at 1,000 ppm of HEMM-Cl. HEMM-Cl induced and enhanced the CH4 hydrate formation with a small amount of addition. Obtained result is expected to be applied for the development of technologies such as gas storage and transport using gas hydrates.

Mitochondrial myopathies are diseases caused by defects in metabolic pathway of mitochondria. Mitochondrial myopathy is known as one of the causes of recurrent myoglobinuria, while clinically, rarely causes acute renal failure requiring medical treatments. We report a case of rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure associated with mitochondrial myopathy. A 58-year-old male was presented with dyspnea and hypotensive shock. The patient had a history of recurrent dark colored urine and cramping leg pain after prolonged fasting. Laboratory findings showed hyperkalemia, azotemia, metabolic acidosis, and elevated AST, ALT, and creatinine kinase. He had no history of trauma or medication. Muscle biopsy showed ragged red fibers in modified Gomori staining. On electron microscope, increased number of mitochondria and abnormal mitochondria were seen. He received hemodialysis and his renal function recovered after 1 month. (Korean J Nephrol 2004;23(3):509-513)

We report an unusual case of adult minimal change nephrotic syndrome relapsed after 15-year of complete remission. In this case, the disease had occurred to the patient for the first time when he was 52 years old; relatively high age, and had been remitted with steroid therapy. After 15 years of complete remission, he visited our hospital with the symptoms of the generalized edema and the pitting edema of both lower extremities that occurred 15 days ago. Massive proteinuria(15,865 ㎎/day) and hypoalbuminemia(1.7 g/㎗) were detected. The pathologic evaluation of the biopsied specimen of the kidney showed he global sclerosis in 19% of glomeruli in light microscopic finding and the fusion of epithelial foo processes in electron microscopic finding. He was treated with pulse steroid therapy(methylprednisolone 500 ㎎/day iv for 3 days) and then, with oral prednisolone (60 ㎎/day). Generalized edema and proteinuria disappeared after 14 days of treatment, and there has been no relapse ever since. Adult-onset minimal change nephrotic syndrome relapses within 4 years after complete remission in 90% of relapsed patients. The relapse after more than 5 years of complete remission, like this case, is very rare, especially in he case of late-onset disease. However, the possibility of relapse of the minimal change nephrotic syndrome after several years of its remission should be considered constantly and the long-term follow-up more than 10 years may be needed.
