      • [論文] 현대 FFV(Flexible Fuel Vehicle)개발

        This paper describes Hyundai's research and development work on a flexible fuel vehicle (FFV). The work on FFV has been conducted to evaluate its potential as an alternative to the conventional gasoline vehicle. Hyundai FFV described here can be operated on M85, gasoline, or any of their combinations, in which the methanol concentration is measured by an electrostatic type fuel sensor. For that operation, a special FFV ECU(Electronic Control Unit) has been developed and incorporated in the FFV.<br/> The characteristics affecting FFV operation, such as FFV ECU control strategy and injector flow rate, have been investigated and optimized through the experiments. And various development tests have been performed in view of engine performance, durability, cold startability, and exhaust emissions reduction. The exbaust gas aftertreatment system consisting of manifold type catalyst and secondary air injection system shows good emission reduction performance including formaldehyde, and finally, the possibility of the FFVs as the low emission vehicles is evaluated by presenting NMOG(Non-Me­thane Organic Gases) levels with respect to MO and M85. With these results, it is concluded that FFV can be a candidate for the low emission vehicles, but more works on its durability improvement is required.

        In the quantitative analysis of oxygenated exhaust emissions (unburned methanol, formal­dehyde) from methanol fueled vehicles, the oxygen contained in oxygenated exhaust gases lowers the FID (Flame Ionization Detector) response factor of conventional THC analyzer and leads to erroneous HC reading.<br/> For correct measurement of various HCs including oxygenated HCs emitted from FFV (Flexible Fuel Vehicle), first of all, the measurement technique Of real HC emissions should be established.<br/> GC and HPLC-DNPH measuring methods specified by the EPA are used in this paper to analyze unburned methanol and formaldehyde components in the exhaust emissions.<br/> In emission test of FFV, unburned methanol and formaldehyde are emitted mostly during cold transient period, and it is shown that formaldehyde emission level is proportional to engine displacements.<br/> In view of the HC emission level, vehicle using M85 has 40% advantage over gasoline-fueled vehicle in OMHCE and has a good potential of a low emission vehicle.

        Natural gas(NG) is an attractive automotive fuel in view of abundant resources and low ozone forming potential of exhaust emissions mainly composed of non-reactive methane, As the emission standard becomes stringent year by year, more attention has been moved to the development of light duty NG vehicles.<br/> HMC has been developing a natural gas vehicle(NGV) for years as an alternative fuel and now is undergoing vehicle emission test, Vehicle fuel system including NG cylinder, pressure regulator and special injector for gaseous fuels was modified to operate on NG. The fuel injector driver module was used to provide the high current that is necessary for operation of the gaseous injectors. Taken into account the unburned methane purification, specially formulated catalytic converters, UCC and MCC, were tested to evaluate a suitable catalyst with high conversion efficiency, Emission test results show that HMC's NGV has possibility to meet the LEV standard and more stringent future regulations, but the vehicle durability should be further investigated,<br/>
