Recently the automotive industry faces many competitive challenges including weight and cost reduction to meet needs for higher fuel economy. The roller hemming technology has been recognized as a new production technique, which contributes to a light-weight car. Hemming is the last forming process in stamping and determines external quality of automotive outer panels such as doors, hood and trunk lid. In this study, implicit finite element analysis of the flat surface-straight edge roller hemming process is performed by using the commercial code ANSYS. This study shows the process of roller hemming simulation.

Recently, the automotive industry faces strict environmental regulations, and takes an effort to reduce the weight of vehicles to meet the needs for high fuel economy. Therefore, the use of light metals such as aluminum alloys has been increased for the production of light vehicles. However, since the formability of aluminum alloys is not as good as that of steel, special attention is needed during the forming processes. Hot Blow Forming have been introduced as fairly new processes for the forming process of light metals. All processes can give better forming capability with high drawing ratio, and they also can reduce the residual stresses on the parts by giving more uniform pressure. In this paper, numerical studies with experiments for all four forming processes have been carried out by using implicit and explicit hybrid code ANSYS LS-DYNA.
