This research presents an active tuning shock wave using a magnetorheological fluid damper (MR damper in short) under condition of high impact. To realize shock wave depending on current levels, a new large size of MR damper is designed and manufactured to produce a 100kN maximum damping force. A performance evaluation of the MR damper is conducted in sinusoidal condition. After evaluating damping force depending on current levels, a shock tester is introduced. The MR damper is located between a mass and the end of the shock tester. To investigate characteristics of tuning shock wave profile and the MR damper in high impact, several experimental conditions are established. During impact experiments, the shock wave of the mass and damping force of the MR damper are measured by accelerometers and a load cell. As a results, dynamic behaviors of the MR damper is evaluated and its shock wave tuning ability is demonstrated by changing the magnetic intensity.
