『사진주보(写真週報)』를 통해 본 일본의 동남아시아 침략과 ‘대동아공영권’ 구상

동남아시아 국가의 분쟁을 조정하면서 ‘대동아의 맹주’로서의 위상을 국민들에게 전달하려 했던 일본은 아시아태평양전쟁으로 동남아시아지역을 점령하자 서구 제국주의에서 해방된 ‘대동아공영권’의 사회상을 홍보하는 기사를 『사진주보』에 게재했다. 일본의 전황이 불리해지는 가운데 도조 수상은 동남아시아 국가를 시찰하며 결속을 다지는 한편, ‘대동아공영권의 맹주’로서의 이미지도 부각시켰다. 일본은 버마와 필리핀에 독립을 부여하고, 자유인도 임시정부를 승인했다. ‘대동아공영권’의 독립국인 태국에 대해서는 과거의 영토를 회복시키고 특별히 『사진주보』의 지면을 할애했지만 대동아회의에 피분수상이 불참한 것은 ‘대동아공영권’의 내부로부터의 붕괴를 의미했다. 한편, 『사진주보』는 일본의 패전 상황에 대해서 보도하지 않았지만 지면에서 사라지는 동남아시아 관계 기사와 전쟁기사, 공습 대응 기사는 일본의 불리한 전황을 그대로 드러내게 되었다. Before the Asia-Pacific War, Japan focused on blocking the U.S.-British Chiang Kai-shek aid route, especially Burma and French Indochina, tried to show off its status to the Japanese people by reconciling disputes between Southeast Asian countries. Later, when the Asia-Pacific War took over Southeast Asia, an article promoting the social image of vibrant Daedonga public sphere liberated from Western imperialism was published in the Syasinsyuhou. When Japan's war situation became unfavorable in earnest, Prime Minister Dojo visited Southeast Asian countries to strengthen solidarity, while also highlighting his image as a leader of the Greater East Asian public sphere. As a way, Japan granted independence to Burma and the Philippines and approved a provisional government for free people. Since Syasinsyuhou is basically a propaganda journal that promotes Japan's policies to the public and enhances its fighting spirit, it did not report on Japan's defeat, but articles on Southeast Asian relations and war articles disappearing from the ground revealed Japan's unfavorable situation. Among the articles on the Greater East Asia Common Territory in the Syasinsyuhou there are overwhelmingly many articles related to Southeast Asia, indicating that Southeast Asia was very important within the the Greater East Asia Common Territory aimed at an economic community.

Natume Soseki’s travel essay Here and There in Manchuria and Korea is a work of literature based on his personal experiences in Manchuria and Korea, but it vividly and realistically describes life in Japanese society and characteristics of Manchuria in 1909. Therefore, we would like to analyze this book not as literature but as a historical document. First, we examined the education system of elites and their life paths after college graduation based on Soseki’s personal experience, including the Imperial University graduates whom he met at that time. We found that his trip was supported by colleagues and alumni of Imperial University. Second, we researched livelihoods under Japanese colonialism in Manchuria. Soseki’s book did not present its information on Manchuria chronologically, but it still helped the Japanese introduce a developmental process to Manchuria.
