The joint stiffnesses must be determined in the early design stage of the vehicle structure. The joints of vehicle structure consist of several sheet. panels with spot welding. The stiffnesses of joints are characterized by section geometric shape. thickness. etc. In this paper joint stiffness variations according to the design change of reinforcement size. flange width, and flange roundness are studied. Optimal design techniques for obtaining the required stiffnesses of the joint structure is presented.<br/>

Low frequency vibration characteristics of a vehicle are mainly influenced by the stiffnesses of the beam type structures such as pillars and rockers and by the stiffnesses of the joint structures, at which several beam structures are jointed together. In this paper the method of modeling and optimization for joint stiffnesses and joint design parameters of the vehicle structure are proposed. First it is described that the method of modeling the joint structure with equivalent stiffness beam elements. To get required dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies. section properties of the equivalent beam element are set to design variables and optimized. The study shows that joint stiffnesses and joint design parameters can be effectively determined using the proposed method.<br/> <br/>
