The main function of traditional bumper is to protect passenger and body of vehicle in low speed collision. In addition to this, recently the requirement for reduction of cost and weight is growing increasingly. In this paper, DFSS is applied to design and analysis bumper to reduce cost and weight. The factors influencing bumper performance is derived to find control factor. Based on this factor, Bumper impact analysis is performed to get optimal factor. Bumper designed by optimal factor is analyzed and compared with vehicle crash test result to verify reliability of design.

It is to be classified into friendly environment and safety problems, as a main technology development of the recent automotive industIy. As these tendency, lots of automobile companies focus on a reduction of fuel expenses and strengthen of crash safety using high strength steel. In this study advanced technologies such as tailored blanks, aIuminum extrusion and high strength steel forming applied to bumper beam will be described. As a result of impact analysis and an actual impact test, in terms of beam performance and a possibility for the mass production will be discussed.
