2010년 전반기 호황을 누렸던 육계산업은 하반기에 들어 어려움을 겪고 있다. 종계 입식 마리수의 지속적인 증가로 병아리 생산이 증가하고 이는 육계 사육 마리수 및 도계 마리수를 증가시켜 궁극적으로 공급과잉 현상으로 다가오고 있다. 이러한 추세는 2011년까지 이어질 전망으로 육계산업의 어려움이 예상된다. 본고에서는 2010년 육계산업을 되돌아보고 그 연장선상에서 2011년을 조심스레 전망하고자 한다.
천궁이 유방암세포 증식, Nitric Oxide 생성 및 Ornithine Decarboxylase 활성에 미치는 영향

The efect of water extract from Cnidii Rhizoma (CRW) on proliferation of human breast cancer cells, nitric oxideproduction, nitric oxide synthase expression, and ornithine decarboxylase activity was tested. CRW inhibited the growth of bothestrogen-dependent MCF-7 and estrogen-independent MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cels. Lipopolysacharide-inducednitric oxide (NO) production was significantly reduced by CRW at the concentration of 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg/ml. Expresion ofinducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was also suppressed with the treatment of CRW in Raw 264.7 cells. CRW inhibitedinduction of ornithine decarboxylase by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate, a key enzyme of polyamine biosynthesis, whichis enhanced in tumour promotion. Therefore, CRW is worth further investigation with respect to breast cancer chemopreventionor therapy.
키토산 올리고당이 유방암세포 증식, aromatase 활성 및 nitric oxide 생성에 미치는 영향

The effect of chitosan oligosaccharides (COS, 1,000 <Mw < 3,000) on the proliferation of human breast cancer cells, aromatase activity, and nitric oxide production was tested. COS inhibited the growth of both estrogen-dependent MCF-7 and estrogenindependent MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. COS at the concentrations of 1 and 5 mg/mL showed 24.0 and 30.0% inhibition of aromatase activity in MCF-7 cells, respectively. Nitric oxide (NO) production in MDA-MB-231 cells was significantly reduced by COS at the concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg/mL. Therefore, COS is worth further investigation with respect to breast cancer chemoprevention or therapy.
생약혼합물이 사이토카인에 의한 갑상선세포의 Apoptosis에 미치는 영향

Apoptosis plays an important role in autoimmune chronic (Hashimoto,s) thyroiditis, a disorder that often results in hypothyroidism. The goal of this study was to induce apoptosis by the combination of inflammatory cytokines, interferon (IFN)-γ and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and to investigate a potential role of medicinal plants in the thyroid follicular cells (FRTL) in vitro. The apoptosis was evaluated by cellular viability, DNA fragmentation, and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated deoxy-UTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Extract of Gamgung-tang (GGT, Glycyrrhizae Radix, black beans, Angelicae Radix, and Cnidii Rhizoma) (0.3~9.0 mg/ml) was shown to maintain the viability of cells treated with IFN-γ (100 U/ml) and TNF-α (0.5 ng/ml). FRTL cells were found to undergo DNA fragmentation with the inflammatory cytokines.The extract of GGT inhibited DNA fragmentation in dose-dependent manner. The cells with TUNEL-positive nuclei were detected with IFN-γ and TNF-α treatment. The number of TUNEL-positive cells decreased with the treatment of extract of GGT. These results indicate that medicinal plants inhibit the occurrence of apoptosis in thyroid follicular cells, therefore, may have therapeutic potential in the treatment of autoimmune chronic thyroiditis.

Inflammatory cytokine, abundantly produced in Hashimoto's thyroiditis, induced Fas expression in normal thyrocytes. We determined that susceptibility to Fas-activated apoptosis could be influenced by inflammatory cytokine and investigated a potential role of Gamgung-tang (GGT, Glycyrrhizae Radix, black beans, Angelicae Radix and Cnidii Rhizoma) in the thyroid follicular cells. $IL-1\beta$ was able to induce Fas expression in normal thyrocytes. GGT inhibited $IL-1\beta-induced$ Fas expression. Thyroid follicular cells were found to undergo DNA fragmentation with the inflammatory cytokines. GGT inhibited DNA fragmentation in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that GGT inhibit Fas-mediated apoptosis in thyroid follicular cells, therefore, may have therapeutic potential in the treatment of autoimmune chronic thyroiditis.

별불가사리 단백추출물을 조제하여 유방암 발생 및 전이억제효과를 측정한 결과 종양세포증식에 관여하는 aromatase 활성이 농도의존적으로 억제효과가 있었으며, 침윤성 유방암에서 과발현하는 COX-2 단백질 발현을 억제하였다. 그리고 유방암이 진행될수록 활성이 증가하는 MMP-9도 농도의존적 저해율을 보였다. 그러므로 별불가사리 단백추출물은 유방암억제기전에 관련된 더 많은 연구를 통하여 유방암 예방물질로서 개발 가능성이 있는 것으로 보인다. The effect of protein extract from Asterina pectinifera on breast cancer chemopreventive (aromatase and cyclooxygenase-2) and metastatic (matrix metalloproteinase) enzymes was tested. Protein extract from A. pectinifera was capable of suppressing aromatase in a human placenta microsomal assay. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity was significantly inhibited by the protein extract from A. pectinifera at concentrations of 10, 20 and $40{\mu}g/m{\ell}$. The extract markedly reduced 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-stimulated matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 activity. These results suggest that A. pectinifera could be of therapeutic value in preventing human breast cancer.
하고초 열수추출물이 Aromatase 와 Cyclooxygenase 활성에 미치는 영향

Water extracts from Thesium chinense Tunczaninov (TCTW) and Prunella vulgaris L. (PVW) were tested for aromatase and cyclooxygenase activities. TCTW and PVW were capable of suppressing aromatase in a human placenta microsomal assay. PVW was shown to be more effective than TCTW in the suppression of aromatase activity. TCTW significantly inhibited cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) activity at the concentration of 0.25 (p < 0.05), 0.5 (p < 0.01) and 2.5 mg/ml (p < 0.005). PVW also inhibited COX-2 activity in a dose-dependent manner in a concentration range of 0.05~2.5 mg/ml. The expression of COX-2 was inhibitied by TCTW and PVW in western blot analysis. These results suggest that TCTW and PVW may have breast cancer chemopreventive potentials by inhibiting aromatase and cyclooxygenase activities.

The effect of protein extract from Asterina pectinifera on proliferation of human breast cancer cells and activities of cytochrome P450 1A1 and ornithine decarboxylase was tested. Protein extract from Asterina pectinifera inhibited the growth of both estrogen-dependent MCF-7 and estrogen-independent MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. Cytochrome P450 1A1 activity was significantly inhibited by the protein extract from Asterina pectinifera at concentrations of 80 (p<0.05), 120 (p<0.01) and $160{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ (p<0.01). The extract inhibited induction of ornithine decarboxylase by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate, a key enzyme of polyamine biosynthesis, which is enhanced in breast tumor promotion. Therefore, Asterina pectinifera is worth further investigation with respect to breast cancer chemoprevention or therapy. 별불가사리 단백추출물을 조제하여 유방암 유발억제효과를 측정한 결과, 별불가사리 단백추출물은 estrogen-의존성의 유방암세포(MCF-7)와 estrogen-비의존성 유방암세포(MDA-MB-231)의 증식을 농도의존적으로 억제하는 효과가 있었으며, 유방암발생 발암물질 활성에 관여하는 cytochrome P450 1A1 활성도 저해하였다. 또한 유방암발생의 촉진단계에 주요한 기능을 가진 ODC 활성도 억제하였으므로 별불가사리 단백추출물은 유방암 발생을 저해할 것으로 기대된다.
