Korea and china have shared the genere of historical poetry which is centered on Chinese history(詠史詩). Chinese characters are used in both poetries, not to speak of identical forms and materials. Historical poetry in the ShiJing(詩經) has the nature of ritual myth, wich has had a great effect on Korean historical poetry. During the period of late T'ang Dynasty, Tu Mu(杜牧) and Ll ShangIn(李商隱) were progressive poets, who tired, by means of the allusion to past historical facts, to eliminate the injustice and corruption of the then ruling class. The two poets' works which have the tendencies of social reform in them influenced Korean poetry. However, Korean historical poetry did not imitate them but prepared for the critical domain on her own. With the advent of Hang ul, the Korean phonetic characters, Korea came to develop her own original historical poetry. It has chiefly been composed in accordance with the form of a long poem The materials of Korean historical poetry have been changed from the conventional stress on Chinese history to the emphasis on Korean history.

In ancient Korea, among primitive tribal communities, marriage had an important significance in terms of reproduction and preservation of life. As the strength of a trive depended upon the number of its people, marriage gave a great significance to the existence of the tribe as to creation of individual life. When we read Samguk-yusa, we find that the ancient people came to get the coecept of life from three elements, that is, Heaven, Earth and Water. The concept of life which originated Heaven is well illustrated in Dangun Myth, the legends of King Jumong's and King Hyukeose's founding nations. heaven represented in these myths means 'the womb of life.' The concept of life which originated from Earth is well illustrated in the legend of Kyunhwon. Kyunhwon's father is said is to have been an earthworm, which means that Kyunhwon, the founder of Hybakje, derived his life from Earth, which represent the transition of value from the former negativeconcept of earth to the possitve conept of life-giving earth. To be more exact, the former concept of life held among the hunters and nomads gave way to the concept of life held among the peasents who believed that the earth is Mother-Earth. The concept of life which originated from Water is well illustrated in the legends of King Talhae, and of Geotaji. In these legends the sea is regarded as the source of life, and water is the symbol of procreation, femininity and maternity. There are three types in the narratives that deal with conception or pregnancy. These are concerned with conceptions as a result of contact with gods(or Buddha), Light and Beads (or Jade). Dangun Myth which is based on the conception as a result of contact with a god represents life which is in accordence with nature. We can see that the legends of King Jumong, King Hyukeose and King Suro are based on the conceptions as a result of contact with Light, which includes sunlight, strange ether (or air), purple cord and lightning, working as the energy of pregnacy. The narrative of Lady Namgan's swallowing a bead (or jade) and conceiving a child shows that jade or bead is a symbol, or an epitome of the universe as well as of authority. Especially, we can see that the comma-shaped (,) jade resembles an embryo.
