Free exercise dates back to physical exercises used for medical treatment among the ancient Chinese in the East, and to the primary exercises of the ancient Greeks and Romans in the West. But these physical exercises were only at the basic stages and had not been developed to a great extent in either the Orient or the West. Modern gymnastics has been put into a systematic form during the lath and 19th century by J. B. Basedow, who was a philanthropical educator, C. G. Salzman, J. C. F. Gutsmuths, who putheavy emphasis on the importance of scientific physical development, F. L. Than, who found the Deutsche Gymnastics, F. Nachtegall, who established the Denmark Gymnastics, P. H. Ling, who created the Sweden Gymnastics, and Niels Bukh, who initiated the Denmark Elementary Gymnastics. The fact is important that Niels Bukh's and Ling's Gymnastics have been employed throughout the world. The theory and practice of both the above-mentioned gymnastic styles have formed the foundation for current gymnastics. Free exercise, in our land, has been quite different from other general sports in both introduction and instruction. That is to say, it has been taught and improved only through some policy of the educational authorities-as a fixed subject of school. In the beginning, our free exercise was adopted as a part of the official curriculum in various schools according to the "School Establishment Law" of Emperor Ko Jong's "Imperial Educationl Rescript" which was announced on the 2nd of February, 1895. In 1907, Yang Jeung School established the first gymnastic department in Korea and trained many teachers. Joo Weon Hee, a gymnastics teacher at Whee Moon School, stated clearly in January of 1910, that the then military gymnastics was generally detrimental to student's health. Moreover, he wrote a new book about free exercise and showed various kinds of examples. From then on, our free gymnastics has become systematized and advanced through many interchanges with many other developed nations.

In the selection of athletes in Korea, the physical strength and technical skill are mainly considered. In the developed countries, the intelligence quotient as well as the physical strength and technical skill is very important in training athletes. From now on we have to apply the intelligence quotient in the selection of athletes. The following results are obtained from the study of the intelligence quotient analysis of the junior high school students. The intelligence quotient of the average students is 105.64 and the intelligence quotient of the athletes is 104.21. The difference between those tow groups is 1.43. The coaching staffs have to continuonsly and scientifically apply the intelligence quotient in training the good athletes.
