Vol.17 No.2

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Glycyrrhizae Radix water extract, known as depigmenting agent, on melanin biosynthesis in the HM3KO human melanoma cells. The inhibitory effect of Glycyrrhizae Radix water extract on melanogenesis was identified by mushroom tyrosinase assay in vitro. To determine whether Glycyrrhizae Radix water extract suppress melanin synthesis in cellular level, HM3KO cells were cultured in the presence of different concentrations of Glycyrrhizae Radix water extract and the effects on cell proliferation, melanin contents and tyrosinase activity were examined after 3 days. Treatment with Glycyrrhizae Radix at various concentrations did not exhibit any change of cell viability, and increased the cell proliferation. And the water extract of Glycyrrhizae Radix inhibited melanin contents and tyrosinase activity in a dose-dependent manner, compared with untreated group. These results suggest that the inhibitory effect of Glycyrrhizae Radix water extract on melanogenesis is due to the suppression of tyrosinase in HM3KO cells.

Those who used to have sovereign power of the nation are called influentials. Studies on influentials by region have been made nationwide, as they help understand how the ruling system during the Japanese rule controlled individual regions of Korea as a colony. However, few studies have been conducted so far on the influentials in Jeolla-do(province), even though it underwent drastic changes in its social situations, due to economic plunder by Japan earlier than any other region. Therefore, the author intended to examine what role the infuentials in Jeollabuk-do had during the Japanese rule of Korea, focusing on the case of Jong-cheol Hong, one of the influentials of Go-chang. To this end, previous literatures on influentials were looked into first, and in order to inquiry into his activities during the period, Records of investigation into Specific Activities Contrary to the Nation, Summary of Banks, Companies, and Associations of Chosun, Registry of Staff of the Chosun Governor General Office, and news articles from Dong-a Ilbo were used as reference. In addition, information on social situations in those days was collected from interviews with Go-chang Culture Center Director Gi-wha Lee and elders of Hyangsan-li, a village where many members of Nam Yang Hong family lived. In conclusion, although some influentials in this region during the Japanese rule were involved in politics, while others were not, those who were involved in politics like Jong-cheol Hong enjoyed extensive foundation for power, and for such foundation, social activities as influentials were also acutely affected by the change of colonial policies of Japan. Moreover, the study concluded that those influentials who participated in politics maintained such power even after the liberation of Korea from the Japanese rule. Nevertheless, it is hard to apply results of this study to all the influentials in Jeollabuk-do, since this study focused on Jong-cheol Hong of Go-chang, one of the influentials in Jeollabuk-do, which should be solved through further studies.

‘Joseon’ Federation of Confucianism was organized to utilize and use Confucian scholars in policies at the end of Japanese ruling, sharing its visions with the Federation for National Mobilization of Koreans. It was formed after the “Conference of Chosun Confucian Scholars” held at the Gyeongseong Civic Center on October 16, 1939. There have been researches on the formation dates, places, and participants of its 13 national associations, but there was no study on the branches that were the subordinate organizations of the local associations. This study examined all kinds of historical materials, finding out when a local branch was established at 76 places and revealing that each branch was fast with formation like the association. The study especially looked into the data of Membership List - Suncheongun Branch of Chosun Federation of Confucianism, Jeollanam Province and analyzed the participating figures. There are two types of membership list materials: one includes the historical materials recorded between February 11 and July 31, 1940, and the other includes the ones between August 1, 1940 and 1942. As the number of members was raised, the board members were reelected, in which process historical materials seem to have been prepared again. There was the participation of modern intellectuals based on the high percentage of the early participating members that changed their Korean names into Japanese ones. Seo Byeong-gyu, who was the early assistant branch head, was replaced with Kim Bong-gak in the later days, which find out “tried more positively, that inducing general public.” The areas in contact with Gurye, Gwangyang, and Yeosu took active pat in 182 한국근현대사연구 2015년 여름호 제73집Keywords: Joseon Federation of Confucianism, local magnate, Japanese Confucianism, Neo-confucian scholars, The Federation for National Mobilization of Koreans, the change of surname, Jeollanam-do sun-cheon Suncheongun Branch. It seems that those who were influenced by those areas and thus actively supported the Japanese imperial policies took much part in the Suncheongun Branch. The percentage of those who changed their Korean names into Japanese ones was considerably higher in the areas where the number of participants was low than other areas, which suggests that those who were from a backward area had a difficult time with participation unless they demonstrated they were following the Japanese policies more actively. That was why the percentage of those who changed their Korean names into Japanese ones was high. Those findings may lead to conclusions only restricted to the Suncheongun Branch. The investigator plans to continue the research with more various local cases.

Background: Due to recent identification of new Malassezia (M.) species, M. dermatis, and M. equi, the genus Malassezia was revised into eleven species that have been isolated from human and animal skin. This has further substantiated the need for molecular techniques to distinguish the various Malassezia species. Objective: We aimed to make the nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using species-specific primers with specificity and sensitivity as a diagnostic tool for differentiating the various Malassezia species from skin scales and fungal cells rapidly and accurately. In addition, we evaluated the common causative Malassezia species in the patients with seborreheic dermatitis, pityriasis versicolor or pityrisporum folliculitis. Methods: Malassezia species-specific primers were designed based on DNA sequencing of the ribosomal RNA gene. The standard strains of eight members of the genus Malassezia such M. pachydermatis, M. furfur, M. sympodialis, M. globosa, M. obtuse, M. restricta, M. slooffiae, and M. dermatis were used for positive control. Each Malassezia species was cultured separately and two or three standard species were cultured together on Modified Leeming and Notman agar (MLNA) media plates. In addition, twenty-five clinical strains of Malassezia species isolated from the skin of patients with dermatological conditions and twenty-three samples of skin scale were used as well. Results: The nested PCR assay with primers for all eight Malassezia species were species-specific since it amplified DNA only from the target Malassezia species, and could differentiate mixed, that is, the two or three Malassezia species of all standard strains grown on MLNA medium precisely. Detection of Malassezia species from clinical strains and patient skin scales using the nested PCR assay was 96% (24/25) and 87% (20/23), respectively. M. globosa, M. sympodialis, M. restricta were the most common causative Malassezia species in patients with pityriasis versicolor, pityrosporum folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, respectively. Conclusion: Nested PCR using species-specific primers is useful and reliable in the detection of various Malassezia species from patient skin scales as well as cultured fungal cells. Norwegian scabies is a crusted non-itchy rash caused by massive infestation with the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. It is usually associated with immunosuppression or neurologic impairment, although it has rarely been reported in normal persons. We report a case of Norwegian scabies in 6-year old girl with acute myeloid leukemia associated graft-versus-host disease. The lesion showed pruritic, hyperkeratotic scaly plaques and fissures on the entire body. Application of a mineral oil preparation from hyperkeratotic areas showed numerous scabies mites. Treatment with 10% crotamiton cream for two weeks resulted in marked regression of the skin lesions, but finally she died of sepsis due to deterioration of her systemic conditions. Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is a benign histiocytic proliferative disorder in which one, several, or occasionally numerous red to yellow nodules are present. The lesion may be present at birth, but usually arises in early infancy. Adult-onset xanthogranuloma differs clinically from juvenile xanthogranuloma in that the lesion is usually solitary, does not involve internal organs and generally does not resolve spontaneously. We report a case of multiple xanthogranuloma in an adult which occurred on the scalp, face and trunk of a 37-year-old. This report describes the clinical, histologic and immunochemical findings of xanthogranuloma that mimic malignant melanoma. (Korean J Dermatol 2007;45(11):1191∼1194)

We describe a 56-year-old Korean man with paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) associated with persistent generalized exfoliative dermatitis (GED). He developed multiple scattered flaccid bullae on the erythematous base with scales over his face, upper trunk and extremities, with mucosal involvement for 4 months. Due to myasthenia gravis he also suffered from ptosis, general weakness, and weight loss of 10 kg for a month. A computed tomography and histopathological examination of the chest revealed a mass in the anterior mediastinum which was confirmed as thymoma. During the course of disease, his erythematous patch with crust lesions became confluent, and then GED developed. After total thymectomy, GED waxed and waned for 2-years and eventually disappeared. Herein, we report an interesting case of PNP associated with persistent GED for at least 2 years, even though the patient had been treated with surgery and medication. Fusarium species are known as ubiquitous soil saprophytes and human skin contaminants. Infections caused by Fusarium species are increasing in frequency among immunocompromised hosts. We report a rare case of fatal disseminated infection caused by Fusarium solani in an acute myeloid leukemia patient. Skin biopsy specimen revealed multiple branched hyphae and spores in the vessel with thrombus formation, and fungal culture showed a fuzzy, whitish colony. Direct sequencing of 28S rRNA gene confirmed the isolate as Fusarium solani. (Korean J Dermatol 2008;46(6):846∼850)
